Big Mountain vs. Park/Urban vs. Powder

Yo i was wondering the otherday what was the most popular in the freeski community. Whether it was charging huge AK spines, throwing dub 12's and superfeds or dropping pillow lines and slaying blower pow. What do you guys prefer? Personally I'm a pow hound.

It all depends on what you have access to. I live in the midwest, therefore I can't go out and hit pillow lines and waist deep blower. For me, its the park and urban. Id like to ski more pow, but god doesnt allow Illinois to get slammed with snow. Although it did snow 20+ inches in one storm this year, that was a fun day.

Haha yeah i feel ya man i live out on the ice coast so the pow is rare too. I am a pow hound among many park rats but im down for sessioning the park on tracked days. Skiing is very fun

Lol your user name is "deeppow." I wonder what you like...

I'm sure everyone on here likes all of the above. On a powder day they will ski powder. When they are heli-skiing in Alaska, they will ski phat spines. And when neither of the above options are available, they will ski the part.

I like to think I do a bit of everything, but if there is pow to be skied, that I can get to one way or another, I won't bother with park.

In the springtime park is a lot of fun though.

this is a funny question to ask. how many people do you expect to actually have skied AK spines? they are so fucking hard to access.... after spending about 3 years of hiking in ak, I have skied true gnarly spines one time.

Riding powder is the best. But touring is the number 1 for sure. Nothing beats summiting something knowing you just bootpacked/skinned your own way up.

pow, gnarly bumps. but the perfect condition in my mind is a perfect windbuffed slope with a few inches of fresh on top. Living in the east i have to Stick to skiing trees, bumps and park though

Where I live there is a decent amount of powder at times.
Normally I'll go ski park.
If there's pow, I will always ski it.
And i don't mind just taking a few laps to get warmed up on the groomers.

I love anything with trees... If you add 2 or 3 feet of pow to it I'll jizz my pants.  I'm by no means a great park skier and I'm stuck on EC so not much big mountain to ski around here.

LOVE tree skiing. i live in PA so we dont get too much of pow around here but i skip school and ski it anytime we get it. other than that, i ski 100% park haha. i hate groomers with a passion, they just piss me off for some reason

thats cause you dont have any groomers that are steep and long enough. Out in the west ripping groomers early on spring mornings is soooo fun. just going trenchtown on some new corduroy at 50 mph is super fun.

i ski mostly back country, but i think that it is really important that anybody who skis should be able to carve on a groomer, run the zipper on the moguls, and tear it up in powder. park is optional, but i find it fun once in a while.

I have been on this site for a while now and this is what ive come to notice:

-everyone who can throw a dub 12 can ski pow or big mountain better than most "pow hounds" on this site or the masses on tgr.

-everyone loves pow

-a lot of people call themselves "pow hounds" because they want to ride twin tips and dress steezy and look the part but are too afraid to progress in park. After all, there is a pretty large acceptable range for what you could call a pow skiier but if you suck at park and call yourself a park skiier... welll...

-who on this site actually skis big mountain?

- lots of people distinguish between park rats and big mountain skiiers. For some reason big mountain skiiers seem to think park rats cant ski. What kind of park rats are they looking at? Most real park rats, kids who are actually good at park, are pretty good skiiers and most can outski other skiiers.

theres some bias in there if you can find it....

i live in massachusetts so we rarely get pow but when we do i like it 10 times more than park.  and thats heavy new england snow.  when i went to utah and skied the pow there it was unbelievable.  park is fun but i would rather drop cliffs, shred lines and ski pow

Skiing is skiing, It doesn't matter what you do if you ski, we're all one in the same.


I hate when people say " I hate park skiing" or "backcountry? AW i'll stay on piste" or "powder hounds are gay" we're all skiers. So stop trying to compare the same thing.

A lot of people call themselves park rats because they are afraid to try natural features and charge lines. Most park rats i know cant ski powder, drops or lines.
