So this past summer my home town of Toronto hosted the G20 summit and shit got fucked up. You already know that.

I was downtown and got arrested for no other reason than being on the street. I was held for over 24 hours and then let go.

A lot of people I know still just don't know what happened and the mainstream media didn't really get the whole story out there as well as I had hoped. You see protestors getting shot with tear gas and rubber bullets and the same 10 second clip of a starbucks window getting smashed, but they only scratched the surface.

Until now! Take it from me, this IS WHAT HAPPENED, I was there. You can even see me at 18:55 in the orange shirt. Oh yeah I was also in the 40 man cage with Tommy Taylor.

If you care about democracy this should be a big deal to you.

well dont you think that it was a bad idea to be in marching with the crowds near the summit meeting, with a huge force of riot police there? your first mistake was joining this crowd in this situation, no matter how peaceful it was they are more likely to think a crowd is a threat more than one person strolling dont the sidewalks. not saying what they did is right, but you could have easily prevented it.

You're missing the point, there was no threat. A dozen windows were smashed in the early afternoon by a few dozen people.

These people then GTFO of dodge, they were long gone. The police flushed us out of queens park and funneled tens of thousands of people onto the bloor street hours after the vandalism happened.

I'm not mad because I was arrested a wish I could have avoided it.

I'm mad because I was shown our rights don't mean shit.

that sucks for you man, i feel bad about what happened to you that day, but with all the chaos, and sheer volume of people don't you think its a little hard to give everyone what they are entitled to, you think they could have brought in 1000+ lawyers into the cell block? I think that the police force was underprepared and have never had to deal with such situations before, and when shit went down they didn't know what to do accept arrest people, cuz thats their job. But anyways you should just look at this like a cash cow waiting to be milked if you wanted to, just sew them and make mad stacks.

that was unreal, thanks for posting this

i remember hearing about this while it was happening, but didnt really know it was that bad. it makes it kinda hard not to hate police after watching that. i know that they dont always act like that, but its proof that they can.

This post pretty much exemplifies the kind of attitude that's really starting to worry me.

When the vandalism happened the cops stood by and watched, cop cars that were burned were about to be decommissioned and were abandoned in the middle of the street in the path of the march. There is evidence of undercover police instigating vandalism.

The chaos you saw on tv never took place anywhere near the mass arrests. The police instigated the confrontation at queens park, the crowd was beginning to thin out before the police started advancing and pushing us out.

Forcing people to leave an area set aside for free speech and demonstration when they've done literally nothing wrong, and then kettling and arresting at random is what. should never happen in a democratic society, no excuses.

Police are supposed to protect the people not arrest the people.

it reminds me of that war act that Trudeau issued back when Quebec was protesting (I think I have my facts right).

The things Canada witnesses when it comes to movements is crazy to think of.

I watched the video, so much things out there were uncalled for. They couldn't grasp the situation, not that I can think of a way to deal with it. But pretty over the top I must say.

Although that incident was a little more extreme, the same idea can be applied.
I don't know, I get what I know from what I learned back in high school and from the news. A lot of these things that happen in Canada stick with me. So I might not know of other countries (besides whats going down in the Middle East and friends).

Back to the idea being applied. Chaos has traveled through the streets of Canada before, it's amazing what both the politicians and people have done in the name of freedom for this country.

Open to discussion.

News Flash: This shit happens in pretty much every major city (but not all) when there is a big ass "meeting of the controlling elite" such as the G20, WTO, or whatever. In every instance, you get a few rioting dumbasses who necessitate a lot more force from police and shit overall. I got to watch that go down in Seattle in '99 on the TV (which was sick but a lot of people need to find something better to do). They were firing rubber bullets, arresting people, and shooting tear gas, therefore it must be the government silencing people and getting power hungry.

Get over it, and next time don't go there, because it is a safe bet that what went down will do so again.

Have you read any bit of this thread? I'm not whining about getting arrested. We live in a fucking democracy, supposedly, we're told we have rights.

I made this thread not to bitch and moan but to show some people the reality of what has happened, what can happen, and I'm certain what will happen again in the future unless some radical changes are made in how we hold our governments accountable.

I don't know what to think about this. On one hand, it is right to arrest those who vandalized and rioted, but on the other it is terrible that they arrested people who were just standing there. I think it's a miracle it didn't turn into a full fledged riot.

peaceful march in the morning had the vandals hiding un it. they broke off and smashed some windows. then the cops started getting hostile with the peaceful protesters and observers in queens park. then there was a totally unplanned peaceful march because we were forced out of the park. then the cops blocked off the street and arrested everyone
