Final cut sequence super slow

So Ive got a my raw clips into a sequence. When ever I drag the line over the footage it freezes up for a bit. Im running the project off a fire wire external so that shouldn't be the problem and Ive saved the work to that folder. Can some one give me some options to fix this?
Thanks
Matt

What codec are these raw clips? Theres a good chance final cut doesnt like their format, so convert them to ProRes 422 or Apple Photo- JPEG if you have an older version of final cut. To convert them, get MPEG Streamclip. If that doesnt work, you need more RAM on your comp.

thing is Ive never had a problem before. Im just using .MOV video files straight from my 7D.
Its something I think I might of changed by accident.

The 7D shoots to h.264 which is not a native editing codec for final cut. Like the man said before, convert your files to apple pro res and you'll be editing like a champ. Final Cut struggles with h.264. When you export to go to the web, then you want to export your finished product to h.264. hopefully that helps

this. i started converting all of my footage in mpeg streamclip to pro res and editing is a zillion times easier. this being said, i just got studio (which comes with pro for those who might not know) recently and have been learning what i was missing out on with just having final cut express.

That's your problem. Convert them/log and transfer them as prores 422

if those file sizes are too big (if you don't have an external drive etc), try using the XDCAM conversion or the DVCPRO HD option for a smaller file size.

Are those good alternatives to ProRes?

i assume converting to prores is also advisable for premiere pro cs4?

Pretty sure no. ProRes is Apples native codec. Not, Adobes. I am sure Adobes are different, but I dont know them exactly. Sure googling or knowledgeable NSers should help out.

I think they are and they are a much smaller file size than the apple prores422. yes, they work perfectly with the FCP workflow (if you don't take my word, the XDCAM conversion is also a recommendation by Philip Bloom as a very good alternative to prores)
All times are Eastern (-5)
