Painting in adobe illustrator

Hi, I guess you've seen the contest with FD outwear. Okay, my question is how do i paint without touching edges. When I paint, it's not net and straight.. I made the patterns of the suit but i struggle to color it..

Any help is most welcome, thanks!

paint in illustrator then make a mask in photoshop. overlay the mask on top. then you dont have to worry about the edges , just keep it in the same area as the suit.
