Dumbass Words

I'm sure you guys have heard them. Words like " Overexagerrate, Overdramatic" and there's another one I just can't think of. People at my school are notorious for using them and making themselves sound dumb. Have you guys heard these?

overexaggerate is so fucking stupid, and not a word for good reason. irregardless is also only said by complete idiots. can't think of any others right now

the use of seen instead of saw

"I seen them over there"

Makes me want to go on rampage. there was a girl i was in school with k-12 that seemed like she would say it as much as possible, and no matter how many times teachers corrected her, the dumbass still said it. im getting pissed just thinking of it

Ahhh! I was just talking about how much I hate "I seen" with someone last night. Fuck everyone who uses I seen!

I also hate when people use the phrase "_______ let alone _________" backwards. For example, "He couldn't cook a gourmet meal, let alone make a sandwich." NO. The sandwich making has to come first or it doesn't make any fucking sense, WHY is that so hard to understand?

And let's not even get into the your/you're/there/their/they're mess.

It isn't so much specific words, it is how words are used. For example, Skithedeep is talking about how upset he gets when people misuse a word, yet while talking about how this upsets him, he is doing exactly the same thing. When he says " there was a girl i was in school with k-12 that seemed," he is objectifying her. (insert sexist joke here) When referring to a person, one must use "who" not "that".

Another interesting nuance that tends to stand out to me is the use of "toward" and "towards." Does anyone on here understand the difference? How many of you say "I've got" or "you've got"? That is simply double-stating. Think about it.....I have got a pair of skis. No, you HAVE a pair of skis. There are hundreds of interesting variances in the English language, and to date I have never met a single person who speaks correctly.

You are correct that spoken English is not identical to written English. An example would be "that'll," such as "that'll be five dollars ma'am." We would never write it as such, but we use it in our day-to-day dialogue, and it is not necessarily wrong. Your example is good, but the emphasis should be shifted to "have." For example, "I HAVE to go RIGHT NOW." If you really want to look into something, the proper usage of "good" and "well" are fascinating and misused at least 90% of the time. They are simple to learn, and will boost your speaking and writing skills greatly.

yeah i work at chick-fil-a and as such deal with peiple a lot and am encouraged to be courteous and conversational. So i typically end up asking people how they are doing and almost always the response is "Im good"
