I've been playing around with the new version of Pinnacle. Its actually not bad but I only got it for free illegally. If you can figure that out its worth it otherwise you can get a 2 week free trial and see how you like it.

Just start with Windows movie maker or iMovie if you are brand new to it.

i'm fairly new to editing and i'm having success with imovie hd (version 6). it's the only imovie that actually works and it's easy to use. i'd highly recommend it if you have a mac.
