Tomorrow i have the choice to rent Armada JJ's at Vail. Is there still any pow left on blue sky basin or back bowls? I could also hold off until Thursday. I live in Michigan so i dont get to ski much pow and and want to try some pow skis.
i tried JJ's while I was out in CO. they're were super fun in powder and they were even good on groomers. I've seen people say they're not but it must be because of all the snow they're used to (i'm from NJ). I felt like i could carve anything out there as long as it's not something reverse sidecut.
Wheerreeee are you renting JJs!?? I'm going to Vail/BC on Thursday (I'm also from Michigan, small world, huh?) and I want to try some JJs so bad after all the good things I've heard about them. How long are you there? The weather report is showing snow all weekend.
im leaving saturday. Im renting them at ski base and ive got the last pair. there is a place in town of vail called breeze that rents them for $45 a day with marker griffons i think
My everyday ski is 107 under waist that I use for park and all mountain out west...
You can always find powder at vail the problem most of the time is that its all the way over in Mongolia or outer mongolia which means you're traversing for the rest of your life back...
On Mongolia Bowl- don't waste your time there. Theres a reason there is always powder there- its not really powder, its a bitch to get to and from, and its not very steep or long. The snow is wind/sunbaked aweful shit that I only consider 'powder' if it hasn't snowed in weeks and im craving anything other than ice/hardpack. There are much better places on the mountain to find some pow at just about anytime.
Unless one wants to hit red zinger. Thats always fun.
And to op: just rent them. You can always find some pow in the trees off a run, and its just fun to shred on the groomers. And it is supposed to snow, so rent them anyways
DO IT... last year I rented a pair when I was in vail and it was great.. This year I bought a pair and I'm in vail.. Call me out if you see a guy cruising around in a armada galactic jacket and red pants.
im willing to hike a bit but not to far. i just dont wanna be stuck on groomers with jj's. anyone know any other good spots other than east vail cuz i dont have a beacon or anything
Oh man, definitely rent them. Vail's gotten ~18in the past 3 days, should be plenty of good pow to be had. Anywhere back in Blue Sky will be good as well as anywhere in the trees. My buddy rides JJs and they slay it all, you should be fine on groomers.
derp, why would you guys tell a kid from MI or NJ who doesn't get to ski powder much (and thus has zero backcountry experience/knowledge/gear) to go to East Vail or out any other gates? So dumb.
when i was at vail and it didnt snow for like 5 days when i was there i found some stashed under the orient express lift. it has pretty fun terrain, trees and rocks to jump off of
I ride JJ's and I'll say they are the best ski I've ever owned. Kill it in pow, groomers, bumps, crud whatever. I haven't tried them in park though. I''d reckon they'd be worth it even if you didn't get a huge dump.
dont do east vail unless you have avy training, i have friends who have skied it. In vail in december we got 5 inches and three days later i was stil finding stashes-pm me if you wanna know how to get to some i just dont want to annoy any locals, but i ski vail every year for like 5ish days so i know some spots
Just rent them. Even if you only get a little bit, they are worth it for half a day. Was just skiing Vail yesterday and it was delightful until about noon. But it is pretty tracked currently. If they get any snow though you will want them. Go for it
I would also suggest not limiting yourself to only jj's if you're demoing take a few laps and swap out with an s7 hellbent bentchetler other powder skis you should easily be able to do this if you demo right next to the hill.
