I have a large bern baker helmet and sadly I didn't know that the inside doesn't come off. Now I look like a retard if I have a beanie on and wear it but I lost the ear pads so I look even more stupid if I just put it on my head. I tried yowies but it's still pretty homo. Now I'm thinking of ripping the attached foams or pads or whatever you call it out of the helmet so that just the hard foam exists. Would this jeopardize my safety greatly or should I just not give fuck? Help me NS.
berns aren't even considered helmets, they're hard hats or w.e.. i wouldn't recommend it.. i think you'd lose a lot of the protection. i'd go buy a helmet instead, then you can remove the pads and wear a beanie
Hard foam is the stuff that actually protects you from falls. Soft stuff is just for comfort.
However, bern helmets are actually classified as hard hats. They don't meet industry standards for a helmet so really, you're not as safe as you could be no matter what.
If you hate it that much I think it's time for a new helmet.
Berns arent considered real helmets because the foam they use isnt EBS foam which is what most have. EBS foam is hard and brittle and made to crack or shatter to absorb great impacts, thus meaning you would need a new helmet every time yoi have a big crash. The foam in berns is soft and somwhat squishy and is supossed to absorb impack by squishing then regaining original form, that way you dont have to get a new helmet every time you have a gnarly chrash. Hoewver the foam used in berns isnt saftey certified so it isnt really known how well it will actually protect yor head
I use a bike helmet with the soft ads ripped out and i also cut the hard foam in half the make my icons fit.. Lol no concussion yet. But I also do have a serious ski helmet if I plan on taking risks.
Bern makes 2 different versions of it's helmets, a "hard hat" version, designed for multiple impacts, and a single impact fully certified helmet. If it is the hard hat, there will be a sticker on the very back bottom edge.
but back to the OP, no, the soft pads are simply for comfort and to adjust the fit. The hard foam is what protects you in an impact
My brother ripped it out and it worked fine for him. Im gonna say go for it. But I dont have a clue how much protection he lost maybe it was stupid doesn't matter now he bought a new helmet
I know that smith makes the "Holt Park" which i just picked up. Its meant to have the soft pads taken out in order to wear a beanie. Id recomend that if your looking for a new helmet.
First off its called EPS. The helmets use EPS, it is a single impact foam. The hard hats use a softer foam that is good for multiple impacts, it is similar to the foam you will get in a normal skate helmet.
