Consider the following feature of Rawls' theory: "People in the original position---the hypothetical contractors---are placed behind a `veil of ignorance' which makes them unaware of their particular circumstances. Because of this ignorance, they do not know how to be biased in their own favour, and they are apparently forced to act impartially." (Wolff, p.155)
