Whats a good portable HD?

So I like to keep all my media In one spot, photo, video etc. Right now I have a iomega drive that's getting a little sketchy and looking like its about to fail. I have all my stuff backed up on another drive, so Its not really a major deal but I think I should get a new one.

So I need one thats 500gb+ that you don't need to plug into a wall and that will works on mac & PC's. The cheaper the better but I also need it to be good & Reliable

does your computer have a firewire port? if so use a firewire drive, much faster.

if you do have a firewire, go this route so worth it.

i have a WD brand and the program system that comes with it is annoying and confusing, but thats just me. i just drag my files over to it instead of using of using the program it provides.

Yea I would 100% get a firewire drive but my comp doesn't have a port :<

Just wondering? Is eSata fater or slower?

I don't have eSata I'm just wondering

eSata is faster because it's essentially the same speed as your internal hard drives. But yeah if you're gonna be lugging the thing around, going on trips with it, etc. etc. definitely get the rugged.

So if your using usb you have to use two USB ports on your comp one for power?

Looks like a power plug. It seems like for this hard drive it does actually use two USB plugs... One for power and one for data if you so choose. (I believe you can use the one USB for power and then use firewire to transmit data, which is much faster)

You should get two or get a drive that is dual raid. You do not want to lo loose your media because of a drive failurena

Oops, hit send by mistake ? But you need to have two copies at all times on separate or partitioned drives if it is your master copy of anything.

Damn. I've had my 500gb for 2 or 3 years, and its fine. A lot of my friends have WDs also that are going on strong.

My passport failed on me too. It was only a year or so after I got it.

BUT my brother has one as well, and his has been fine for 2 years or so.

I have a 1GB MyBook that I've had no problems with, yet (knock on wood). It's two or three years old now.
