Ok, when are you going?
Forget Germany, as the only good resorts atm have only little snow.
Stuttgart is like 2,5h drive away from the Swiss/German border and about 3,5h drive away from major Swiss ski resorts. Names are Laax, Lenzerheide, St. Moritz, Arosa in the region GRAUBUENDEN and Engelberg, Grindelwald and Andermatt. However, if you plan to go within the next 10 days, the resorts with more snow this season are further south, about 5h drive from Stuttgart. These belong to the Southern Alps close to the French and Italian border. Names: San Bernardino, Verbier, Zermatt...
And if possible, I would go to Italian or French resorts anyway because of the good conditions. Names: Livigno, Monterosa, Piemonte, Seriestre.
Driving will be fine, but if you can afford the extra money, be sure to know that railway connections through the Alps are phenomenal...at least by American standards. ^^
Most big resorts are almost entirely above the timerline, so tree skiing is pretty much reserved for stormy days.
My suggestion would be the southern French or Italian Alps, as they have considerably better conditions atm. than the Northern Alps, which have seen a desastrous last 30 days without any snowfall. :/
