Why do pros have no love for Tahoe?

It has rediculous BC with easy access
It has the most stable snowpack in the continental US

It gets 300 days of bluebird a year
The scenery w/ the lake is gorgeous
450+ inches of snow per year

Has world class resorts
Gets tons of snow
The sierras are a MASSIVE mountain range w/ the highest mtn in the lower 48

Snowboarders have tahoe in movies all the time
pro snowboarders call tahoe home
Tahoe has a surprisingly large amount of good urban spots

It just seems like tahoe is super conducive to filming but it is never featured in pro ski flicks. but in snowboard flicks it is prominently featured. Any reason for this?

Sierra cement, that's why. Nah but for real though- movies have based around Tahoe for years, everything goes in cycles. NAME DROP ALERT: CR, McConkey, Holmes x2, Townsend, Backstrom, Skogen, Wilson, Gaffney, etc etc etc. have all resided/made careers from skiing in Tahoe. It's an amazing area you are right, but not an easy place to shoot when the snow goes to shit a day after the sun comes out...even Standard Films I'm sure would attest to that. But the sun sure makes it nice for shooting park!

^ I agree....Tahoe has a pretty big scene especially around Squaw. There's plenty of stoke out there....Wait for the new "Tahoe Budz" show tomorrow on Inspired Media...it should be dope!

SHHHHHHH!!!!

I kind of never understood it either. I know Tanner has been out in the area a bunch (especially in the past), but the ski scene there is NOWHERE close to the snowboard scene.

I love Tahoe though. As far as "sierra cement" goes, in the 4 years I have lived there and the past 3 years that I have gone back to film on multiple trips, I think I have run into "sierra cement" problems maybe a half dozen times.

Sure the snow isnt some like 3% water content stuff, but it really is not bad.

Also, you just have to know where to go to avoid the sun baked stuff. I cant say I have really had much of a problem finding good snow even 5+ days after a storm.

Tahoe is the sickest. A good majority of our backcountry footage over the years comes from Tahoe and the surrounding areas. More then anywhere else.

People might kill me on here because they dont know much about the Sierras or just love Utah, but from a lot of experience...

Sierras>>>>>>>>Wasatch

As far of a lack of skiing scene in Tahoe, that is just a Californian thing in general. I'm from California but moved to Utah for some real snow and college. Tahoe, Mammoth, and Socal are all pretty dominated by snowboarding. I don't see it changing that much.

Notice all those names that were dropped are big mountain skiers?

You know why?  Because Tahoe snow sticks unlike Colorado snow and a lot of other places.......

As far as the park scene is concerned?  Save that shit for mammoth,  I'm pretty content on riding average parks and above average terrain on top of copious amounts of snow fall.

Sierra cement?  I skied Colorado, the lightest snow in the US IMO (lighter than utah's but never enough to make anything good)  and I prefer it to co snow because it covers stuff and even when it does get slushy you can still jump off things and make it fun vs bullet proof things in colder climates.

To each his own but I like not having a huge scene.

growing up at hood and then moving to Colorado for a while .. i noticed something.... skiers are the minority on the hill... then in Colorado it was switched. it just a west coast thing. i guess

oh yeah.. Tahoe is full of wakeboard bros with there von dutch trucker hats. blasting spineshank all day long.

The snow in CO sticks. That's why we can shred 7-8 months of the year. Prob not as well as Tahoe because your snow is heavier but it does. It's Utah where it doesn't stick. I was there all week and it was like fucking ugly brown shit everywhere. No snow anywhere but up on the resorts. We have at least 4 feet on the ground here.

IDC if people think Utah's snow is lighter, I love CO because it actually LOOKS like winter here all winter hahaha. So I see your point fo sho.

I think it's because of the large snowboard scene like the dude up there said though. I've heard Squaw and Kirkwood are sick but I would never wanna go there for the fact that the whole Tahoe (Cali in general) area is so board dominant. Just not my vibe. UT & CO = Skiers. CA = Boarders.

tahoe is over looked for sure. but in all honesty the parks are lacking compared to breck and key. we dont get jumps until mid january... huge issue. as far as urban and bc goes, tahoe kills it, and im fine with no pros being around, more for me ha

Actually those places and Alpine meadows are dominated by skiers.

The only resorts dominated by snowboarders from what I've heard is northstar and probably heavenly.

You know why?  Because those mountains fucking suck and the majority of gapers wanna do sweet x games style trix like Shaun White.

I can tell you right now that the skiers at squaw are a lot more fucking core than anywhere in the US, speaking of which I'm the best skier in Tahoe.

But yeah Tahoe seems to get the short end of the stick. But as has been said before, I'd rather not be the huge spot for comps and filming, keeps the crowds down to a degree. Just steer clear of Northstar..

All I know is Tahoe is getting dumped on right now...3ft+ in some areas....I'd expect some film crews will be out there this season getting shots....and all the local are probably goin' dumb

first alot of places are gonna end up with 10 ft by saturday.

secondly, these kind of storms happen a couple times a year, every year in tahoe. it dumps feet in 3 days, then goes bluebird for a week or two. that is the tahoe cycle.

and ya film crews will be out there GTS'ing but they will be snowboard crews, not ski crews, outside of MSP because they have the gaffney/mcconkey/jt holmes connection.

I know dude, I grew up skiing Tahoe for about 17 years. Been to every mountain and I know all about the storm cycles Tahoe gets....I'm super jelous all my friends are killing it out there right now but Idaho is getting some snow too...

And there will def be some skiing crews out filming...I know for sure rich will be filming with skogen and sean fields for Tahoe Budz....

um no. snowboard crews out here only get after urban when it snows with the exception of standard and jeremy jones showing up once a year. the majority of local snowboard crews dont have sleds.

MSP doesnt even film out here any more. Level 1 has been here but only for urban. TGR no, PBP no, other film companies, no.

its the other local ski crews who get it after it when it snows here.

Unless you have like Moment Donner Parties of Hellbents or something, sierra cement does suck some dick. buuuut, if it snows all night and you go up next day on steep stuff (in other words, NEVER go to northstar on a pow day) then pow is fine.

Seriously though, I have no idea what you're talking about. Yeah, film companies don't shoot here a lot. Less publicity = fewer people, which we could do with as is... and there's a fuckload of pros here, every other person on the mountain is a pro.

Maybe there was a collective movement to head to Mammoth.... cause in the last few years, the ski scene has exploded there. I couldn't believe it the first time I took a lap through the park with more than 5 females on skis. It was silly amazing.


Another reason could be that it is a bit more out of the way.. same for mammoth. Like you never really see entire segments filmed there. Given Reno airport is great and all... but there isn't anything really near by that is worth filming at either. So it needs to be a set up trip and then all you are really left with is park cause well... it could snow for 20 days and then not snow for 30.

Most of the footage that I see out of the sierras is all local riders or the companies are based out of socal so it's convenient.

Not quite the same as being in Colorado, seeing a storm in telluride then seeing another in Salt lake.... It's pretty much always snowing somewhere in the rockies....

Not saying it's better in CO... I prefer the 10 foot dumps and sunny days... but not the easiest to plan around.

Squaw and Alpine are most definitely NOT dominated by snowboarding.  I skied Squaw everyday for 6 years, and it is indisputably dominated by skiers.  There is no question about that.  I would say at least 80% of the rippers you see around Squaw on a daily basis are snowboarders. 

I don't know what the OP is talking about.  There is tons of Squaw footage in the movies.  MSP had a huge Tahoe segment last year, and there is usually Tahoe backcountry footage in their films.  Scott Gaffney lives their.

Squaw has always had a huge pro scene.  It might not be quite as big as it once was, but I would say Utah and Whistler are the only places with more guys getting big segments.  Breck might have more park guys, but I really could care less.

I would say the PRO scene at Mammoth is a bit more on the snowboard side.  As to the ordinary expert skiers there, well that is more balanced.  If you don't see tons of skiers ripping up Mammoth, well you're not in the good terrain.  Mammoth does have a lot more boarders than Squaw, I will say that.

Once again, you are completely incorrect about Tahoe being board dominant.  Squaw is one of the most ski dominant places you will ever see.  Saying it is board dominant is just not true.  No one who has ever been a Squaw local will say otherwise.  It is just not even close.  The vast majority of the guys killing it at Squaw are skiers.  The majority of the locals I knew were skiers.  It really is not even close.  Alpine is the same way.  Kirkwood also has a ton of skiers.  Maybe Heavenly/Northstar/Boreal are board dominant, I don't know and don't care.  Those places suck.

It really amazes me that there is this misinformation out there. 

I ski Mammoth about 40 days a year, and I don't see it as all that board dominant.  Maybe in the park, but not on the mountain.  On the mountain I would say it is about even.  Mammoth is much more board dominant than Squaw, but there is still a big skiing vibe there.

The board dominant places are the socal ones.

If you avoid Tahoe because you think it is board dominant, you are really missing out.  It is not board dominant, at Squaw the opposite is true.

On the contrary, I would say Tahoe is definitely popular in the pro circuit...the names were already dropped above, but Squaw especially has a rep everywhere else for it's big terrain, solid snowpack, lots of bluebird days paired with pow days, etc. I would say the major complaint would be the Sierra Cement and/or weather patterns like this winter....powder day after powder day followed by Juneuary followed by the lovely recent dumping that Tahoe is getting now.

And really, what big name pro skiers ride around tahoe? JT Holmes, cody Townsend, Ingrid Backstrom...

For gods sakes, jeremy jones and torstein call tahoe home. two of the best 3 snowboarders in the world, but very few big name skiing pros.

Oh and thursday night we about to get hit with a storm that will drop legit utah blower on tahoe.

Living in CA, I find there is far less bullshit to put up with than most places else... CA is one of the chillest most laid back places in the States. As for "just to ride a good park"... I won't try to fix what's broken if it keeps you out of my powder
