Victory For Bush

Well, today the US handed over power to the new Iraqi governent two days ahead of schedual in order to thwart insurgents. The entire thing went off without a hitch, prepare to not hear about it.

This morning I woke up to hear on the radio that we had successfully handed over power in Iraq, and I then put on the always faithful Fox News for more info. They had plenty of information, several corispondance, and other call in experts. So, in intrest of getting a fair and balenced view of things I swithced to MSNBC and not a word. They had something about Enron on and nothing about handing over power. Then to CNN, the information did little more then grace the ticker.

When Bush does have a victory, I find it intresting that only one news station covers it in the least. While Fox is right all other media is way left, so I don't see why everyone gives shit to fox for being conservative, they need to balence out the other channels.

Regardless, I find it a shame that only one channel covered this event, and it is definite proof that the media is helplessly liberal and anti-bush.

I fucking hate politics... but I live within society so i cant seem to get away from them. First off... why do we een talk about politics here when no one is going to be swayed by any argument? secondly, how can all of you bush idolizers think that what is happening is right? and you say study up on some history... ok, nato has agreed to train iraqi soldiers. iraq is still a very volatile country, nothing has changed socially. the people dont care about this, theyll just keep on living in the same way they have for the last 2 or 3 thousand years. i mean eastern syria is basically more western iraq... but theses people are going to do things the same way now as before and the iraqi soldiers we train and supply will probably do the same thing that soldiers we trained in the middle east and africa did... theyre going to start attacking us with our own weapons. also, we've set up the new leader... like we did in say... panama a while back.

ok, im not saying we need to just pull out now and say fuck em... although it wouldnt be bad, we wouldnt have to deal with it, people there would do... whatever theyre going to do anyway... we just wouldnt be controlling the oil, which is the real goal and we all know it. and our dependence on oil really isnt helping anyone. i bet a lot of scientist couldve figured a lot out with a couple trillion dollars... i'm not saying sadaam should still be in power either, we all know he was a cruel, fucked up fella. but our intentions, reasons, methods... they were all totally wrong. this whole situation is such a display of global social irresponsibility on our part.

So the 'liberal' media isn't covering the 'handover' of 'soveirgnity' to Iraq? I'd say NPR is pretty liberal, wouldn't you? And yet here I am listening to hours of in-depth coverage of the handover and the future of the Iraqi government and its effect on the geopolitical region.

I haven't watched Fox News's coverage of this event, but are they going into that kind of depth about it? Are they talking about the Kurds and the Sheas and Sunnis and whether it is at all possible that they will be able to get along? Or are they just saying that 'the handover went fabulously' and repeating that about 400 times?

Do you think us liberals like to be uninformed?

Fuck that, almost all of televisions media is right winged. If you were any smarter you would realize that msnbc and all those other newscasts are owned at least 60% by the same person, who happens to be family member to bush.

its a sign that bush has probalby finally realized that the american people do not like their children and friends getting kiiled. He has realized that unless he atleast tells people he is going to pull out of iraq they wont vote him back into power. Inaddition bush has securred what he came for: oil. Some of the ritches oil fields in the middle east after saudi are now under control of the USA. No one needs to be tolded that it is the most important resorce to the american dream (least ways bush's). Its good to see that the americans at least entertain the idea of pulling out of iraq, returning it to its rightful owners, but i wonder weather if the truley do pull out, the iraq they will have left behind will be better off? and for that matter weather the USA may have created an enemy that they could be without. It will be interesting to see what the future holds, but one of the reasons they may not be publisizing it is that few or no troops will be coming home, only the figure heads will be changed, but the 'power' will remain in the same hands it has been in since the begining. At least we can still entertain a shard of hope that the USA may, in future clean up this mess they have created.

Just because the handover occurred 2 days ahead of schedule does not mean its a victory. the test begins now. I'm glad that bush didn't wait till after June 30th to do this, and make himself look even worse, but all this really is, is a gesture.

I hope that things go well from this point on, and I do believe Bush will do a better job at this than Kerry. I see way too much Bush bashing by Liberals and Democrats alike, however, not too many solutions.

I hope this goes well is all I can say.

Well if these ppl are so educated and open to see the facts why are there so many posts bashin the move on this thread. NO THE TROOPS ARE NOT PULLING OUT THIS MONTH OR NEXT. But if you expected that to happen or you eve posted sumthin remotely close to our troops leavin right now also consider yourself uneducated.

It is the first step in the country being handed over they are leavin the troops to maintain peace and train the fighters. They are doin this so they will be prepared and the new govt is not overthrown by radicals. Beleive me we need the troops to be out of their as soon as possible to stop the attacks by fighters just lookin to kill Americans!

Most of the liberals just scream and shout how Bush screwed up and point out reasons why he screwed up. I am a conservative and i will vote for Bush(for the moment unless sumthin changes) but i am sayin the war in Iraq was a mistake, but how come evertime sum one asks the ? what should we do know none of you liberlas answer. Bush and the adminstrationa has admitted the war was wrong as a politician would do by sayin there wernt ever WMDs but now he is tryin to fix it! Kerry poses no solution to the problem just a giant index finger to point out the obvious BUSH will do a better job!

^deffinatley quite a hole, i think that there are some solutions but none that are easy, short term, or nice. The west has to show through actions that we are not infact enemies of the middle east, and are not intent on distroying their way of life. I will have to reiterate my opinion on the iraq war because smokinskier has to reiterate his. Bush did not go into iraq because of weapons of mass destruction. Ill leave it at that beacuse you can read my posts on other threads if youd like.

Wow, I've been so caught up in the Canadian federal election, I'm behind on my US politics. Anyways, about this issue, now.

I have to ask. How is it different now that the Iraqi government is (quote unquote) in power? What actual things do they have power over that they didn't before? You have to remember, there are still over 160,000 troops in Iraq that are intended to remain there to 'support Allawi's government' (that figure courtesy of CNN and MSNBC). A lot of Iraqis seem to be regarding this as a cosmetic change more than anything. Is there any reason to think they're wrong?

The only other thing I have to say is that Paul Bremer's reformation of the Iraqi legal system (making 97 changes: everything from capital punishment laws to tax regulations to driving laws) seems to me the sort of Americanization that a lot of Iraqis were afraid of when this occupation started. Why not let them set their own legal code? This strikes me as just one more example of a U.S. controlled state beneath a thin veneer of sovreignity.

Beacuse these laws and rules are being implemented it is only confirming the iraqi's fears about an ocupuying force only carying out there aims and wants, not the peoples

i haven't read all of the posts, but i have mixed feelings about iraq. on the one hand, saddam wasn't a terribly great guy (let's draw some comparisons to hitler - genocide, lebensraum, was put in check and weapons restrictions were made after the first gulf war, and then the near policy of appeasement that some countries wanted to impose...) and he was a potential threat to the area (israel, you know, the poor people who have to put up with shit like suicide bombings, but the entire situation the the fault of the UN - a whole different discussion). on the other hand, the intel that our government had on him was DEFINATELY incomplete, and, let's face it - the US, after 200 years of not doing it, INVADED an sovereign nation... i'll let that last part sink in (200 years). but, i will say, if iraq can pull off being a democratic nation in the middle east, then the US has a big one-up on terrorists that threaten every american citizen, whether they're republican, democrat, black, white, christian, jewish, or muslim. we don't know how things are going to turn out over there, anyway, so i really think it's unfair to draw conclusions like 'bush is a fuckup,' etc. this was probably a long ass post and no one will read the entire thing, but oh well.

oh, and someone mentioned the marshall plan earlier - what we're doing how has been tried and tested. the whole reason ww2 started was because of the ridiculous penalties imposed on germany at then end of ww1. yeah yeah yeah, i know someone's gonna say 'ww1 and 2 were wars where someone invaded someone else, and iraq isn't' but that's not my point - we can't very well just go into iraq, take out the leadership, then say 'good luck, goodbye' and pull our military out. we have to stay there in order to keep the area stable and to put down anything that might threaten the development of the new government (and who says the new government will be a puppet gov't? it hasn't even been formed yet, so i don't see how you could even begin to jump to that conclusion), as well as to rebuild the country. japan for example - granted we dropped 2 atomic bombs on them, we provided them with economic and military aid (military aid? yeah, after ww2, japan formally said that they could no longer have a military, so the US volunteered that if japan EVER got attacked from an outside force, that the US would provide full defensive capabilities), and in a little more than 10 - 15 years, japan and the US were full blown allies, no animosity towards each other whatsoever.

point is, we need to stay there for as long as it takes to make sure that iraq gets the economic and military aid that is needs.

the usa should stay in iraq beacause of the fact that george bush is, as you put it 'a fuck up'. Iraq was not a result of taking out saddam husein for the intrest of the world, and for his people. He was infact an evil man that squandered billions of dollars on himself, and was the perpetrator of mass genicide of the kurds. He came to rule the bath party by killing off his opponents. Its the same issue about motives. The 'western world' screwed iraq over after the gulf war, and while some countries attempted to reestablish links with iraq to attempt to help out with humanitarian aid etc. some countries felt very strongly, having a grudge against saddam. I think that the usa should remain in iraq, suffer the losses, and clean up the great mess they created. Saddam was not a threat to the USA. He did not harbour terrorist groups, he did not have nuclear weapons (which the USA has many of) he did not have an army big enough to come over to the USA and he had no resource that he could threaten to take away from the USA. So while its nice to try and justify the war by saying that he was stopping a potential terrorist threat, the fact remains that he ultimatly made the USA a much large target than they already were. Enlistment to al'qaeda has doubled since the iraq war started. The thing that the USA should do is show the middle east that it is there to help them, eventhough that was not thier inicial intent. They need to abide by the UN from now on, abide by the international criminal court and other international laws. In addition if it is going to hand over power to the iraqi's then it should also look at releasing all the 'terrorists' that they have captured in iraq. That brings up the convinient term 'terrorist'. Its just a word that alows you to have all you basic human rights taken away, it alowes you to be raped, sodomized, tortured. That sounds like a society to emulate. In fact the shiite and suni muslims like that idea so much that for the first time in the recent past they have put aside their differences to fight for a common goal. Well you know looking back i car really see how bush was not a screw up.

^ i said that if iraq had a democratic govenrment, and was an ally (i didn't say the ally part, but i thought it could be inferred) of the US, that it could be a big help in the 'war on terror' (come on, even i think that name is stupid - terror is a method of waging war, so it's sort of saying 'war on blitzkreig') - i didn't say that iraq was harboring terrorists. terrorists may have been coming through iraq as a matter of course, not necessarily because saddam was allowing them to come through, but since it may have been the shortest route, only way, etc. i really hope you didn't infer that whole part from what i posted.

Who ever said that media does not have a liberal bias as a whole is truely misinformed. Fox news is the only large news channel that has a conservitive bias, and due to this it has become the most popular because of the lack of competeition from another conservative channel. MSNBC, CNN, NY Times, and countless others are all liberal. The democratic party has even admitted this and are attempting to exploit it. So, whenever you say that the media is conservitive in it's bias then you just look ignorant.

in case you didn't know scratchcobra, john mccain isn't a democrat. he actually ran against bush for the republican nomination four years ago. why he didn't win is beyond me. same thing with kerry, let's just choose the worst possible person to run for president.

That's right. I AM scared that this could get Bush re-elected. And the reason it could is because the American public has the attention span of a goldfish with a head injury. It worries me that Bush can pump this (largely symbolic) hand-over to the point that the American public forget who started this war in the first place.

Sure, it's good that Iraqis are back to making SOME decisions for their own countries, but it's questionable whether this new government can support an American-made infrastructure, enforce American-made laws, and at the same time keep all the hostile factions from killing each other. Iraq's state cohesiveness is rock-bottom right now and the fact that religious groups like the Kurds feel as though they are not being properly represented only makes things worse. We're in a big mess right now and we can't just cut & run: we have a responsibility to get things working again. And to do that, we need international support.

He has the facts, then? Because in that case, his constant lying could almost be deemed a pathos. I think you'd probably be making a better political argument in saying he doesn't know dick all... at least then, you might be able to say the poor decisions he makes aren't his fault. Of course, you'd still be wrong, but at least you'd be making an argument.
