This thread is for people to ask questions about lens, give feedback, ask for suggestions, whatever, in hopes to clean up this section and end thread-jacking.

So please participate and I ask the pros to reply in here to get this in their threads.

I'll start it off with asking if a 50mm f/1.8 or a 28-80mm f/3.5 would be better for a good DSLR filming lens. If either of these are bad since I'm still retarded at this stuff, let me know what's good.

Personally, I really like my 8mm fisheye.

A lot of my friends who have been filming with DSLRs longer than me give me shit, but I get some pretty cool results with it that even they can't deny.

And those lenses above are basic lenses that you get if you buy a camera in a whole package thing huh?

Oh! I've been looking at 8mm's too. Although I do have a low budget from a minimum wage job. Find me a cheap one (New, used, don't care) and I'll buy it.

And hell yeah. Atmosphere is pretty much the rap group of my life.

so a few lens catagories that i've been looking at are

a new 50mm (or other normal lens)

a normal zoom (something to bridge the gap between 50 and 80mm)

and a fisheye.

if anyone could recommend lenses based on sharpness of the lens and the speed that'd be great.
i'm using a D200 if it makes a difference.

pretty much. especially with the normal zoom. with the normal prime i'd be using it a little more for portraiture.

also forgot to say that advice on a macro would be nice

fisheye: Nikon 10.5. i've heard great things about it.

new fifty: an old (i want to say ai-s or ai) 50 1.2. Only like 400-500 and super sick lens. I have one on my want to buy list.

don't know nikons standard zooms that well so I can't really help you, but maybe a 24-70 ish range? I think they have one.

Obviously the 10.5, just wondering if there were any mystery lenses that i hadn't heard of.

have looked into it, just wondering if there are cheaper temporary lenses. I have the Zeiss 50 1.4 and that Nikon 1.2 on my To Buy list.

I wish i could afford that lens. the 24-70 2.8 would be beautiful.

I'm going to throw it out there that it would not be worth it to drop 400-500 on an old m42 or w/e lens. I got a Pentax Super Takumar 50 1.4 off craigslist for 50 dollars, and that's in Canada.. lol.

I'm positive that I'm getting an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (t2i kit lens) and a 50mm f/1.8, and I want a wide angle as well. I'm going to be shooting some skateboarding/skiing and landscapes, and also some portraits (I figure I'll mainly use the 50mm for portraits).

I was gonna get a 17-40mm f/4, but the dude got a better offer. Any wide angle suggestions for around $600?

I've just recently gotten into photography and have been using an 18-55mm kit lens that came with my Nikon D3100. I'm looking to buy a zoom lens and was looking at the basic Nikon 55-200mm, because I can afford it. Does anyone think I should save up for something that ranges to 300mm, or is 200 enough? Any lens suggestions would be great too. Thank you very much.

IMO a 24-70 isnt the best investment for someone using a D200 unless you need that range when you upgrade to a full frame camera. the reason that a 24-70 is such a big hit is because its perfect for a walk around lens on a ff camera. with the d200, you need to take into consideration the dx crop factor. 24 with a 1.6 crop factor will shoot like a 40mm lens (about) on a full frame, which isnt that wide. My buddy has one on his cannon dslr and is always wishing it went wider. I do agree that you can always just swap out lenses, but a lot of the time its way easier to just have 1 lens for general walking around and not have to swap to a UWA if you want a wider shot. I would check out the closest DX equivalent, the 17-55 f/2.8. It gives you the flexibility that you get with a 24-70 on a full frame camera, but on a dx sensor. They can be had for ~900 refurbished on ebay. It is also sharp as a tack, focuses way faster and quieter (did I mention a hell of a lot more accurate as well) than my 50 f/1.8 (although I do love that lens for some things), and it allows me to zoom (some people dont prefer this, but I do).

anyone know anything about the Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6? looking at it to shoot telephoto and its a cheap price too. only worried about the quality.

How about the Canon 10-22? It would kind of suck if I upgraded to a full frame camera down the road, but if I stick with Canon stuff I should be all set, correct? And it seems to be a pretty well reviewed lens... I found one for like 660. Since it's a "super-wide" lens would it only be good for shooting landscapes and what not?
