So, my newest home built setup finally got put together today. Starter 'er up, everything seems to have power. Fans are running, lights are lighting, DVD drive works, but nothing is going through to the monitor. It just shows no signal. I don't know what the deal is. Any ideas?

Uh, yes. If you'll notice I pointed out that everything is already on and appears to be working, except the monitor is receiving no signal. And I don't get any beep as is normally the case after a POST test. But this is first time startup.

video card not in slot properly
video card not compatible (but highly doubt that)
video card is defective

sucker should be visible right away, but I aint no geek squad

wait so it's not getting through POST? do you get any sort of beep code? Usually when a comp fails to go through POST it gives a beep code to clue you in on whats going on, but it depends on your mother board mfg. you can google search to see what the codes mean. If it's not getting through POST, its probably not your gfx card, its getting hung up somewhere before it even tries to display anything on the screen. My suggestion would be to reseat everything and make sure it's all plugged in, if that doesn't help, you may have a defective item and in that case I would systematically remove components and see if you get different errors. ie if you get the same error with each piece missing and then you remove the ram and get a different code, chances are your ram is bad etc. if you've tried reseating and still no luck and no beep code, could be a faulty mother board or you may have some other whack issue in which case I would try to swap your parts in a working computer to test them individually or head down to your local tech shop and pay them to diagnose your problem

its either the graphics card, monitor, or BIOS is gone. if ur not geting any codes like he said^ i dont know what to tell you. First thing id do is check out that graph card make sure its in properly.

Definitely reseat everything, but the graphics card is not always the issue when you are getting no display. Another thing I thought of it make sure you have adequate power, a psu that is too weak can cause all sorts of weird shit, I thought my graphics card or my motherboard was dying but when i went from my 450 watt to a 750 watt psu it solved all problems

Do you have any usb drives or anything plugged in? I've had issues like that. Also, does the monitor display that it has no signal, or is it just black? If it tells you you have no signal, its just not plugged in properly.

To answer all these questions:

1. Regarding the beep codes, I hear no beeps at all.

2. The GPU *seems* to be functioning in that, at least, the onboard fan is going full steam.

3. It seems unlikely to me that the monitor is the problem. I unfortunately can't test it, though, because the only thing I have to plug into it is an HP laptop, and HPs suck a lot, so much so that my HDMI out on this thing no longer works.

4. My PSU is a Corsair 750tx. The GPU is a radeon 5870. It should be more than enough wattage to power everything and it seems to be working fine, like I said everything is going strong, just nothing on the screen.

5. Nothing in the usb ports, that's not the issue, and monitor displays that it detects a cable plugged in but that it's not getting any signal from that cable.

I'm going to try re-seating everything but I strongly doubt that will make a difference.

Hmm yeah tahts the point where it starts to stump me... Recheck all your connections, make sure you have your hard drives properly jumpered (master or slave) and make sure your boot drive is plugged into your primary sata port on your moboard...

The weird part is is that it should go through the bios even without a drive... You put the ram in right? hahaha

also there should be a jumper on the moboard that re-flashes your bios. If you can find that, I would flash it, and make sure it is in the proper position...

Mobo was getting power, CPU wasn't. ATX 12v 4 pin from the PSU wasn't set in properly.

thats a seven I processor for 300 dollars... No way the amd equal is less than 200 dollars.

yea, this can be true. I've learned to spend the extra 30 bucks on a good mobo and you'll save lots of hassle and money in the future. There are just a lot of shitty mobo's for intel processors but if you buy a solid gigabyte board there should be no difference between intel and amd as far as upgrading and compatibility.

Will my desktop handle anything I can throw at it on max settings? Yes. So why bother with some computer geek dick measuring contest about what scores better on passmark tests. In 2 years this thing will be just as outdated as a more expensive Intel machine but I'll be making enough money that 1500 bucks on a new tower won't sting as bad as it would now. All in perspective.

I'm not saying you went the wrong way with an amd, All I'm saying is that you could build the equivalent machine with intel for ~ +- the same price. The processor you got is sick and you got a great deal on it. Really I just didn't agree with the kid that said you would save 1000$ by going with amd.
