Thanks skibum, i was about to bring up the war of the 3 henrys. Technically, atlantaski, WASPs have been more heavily persecuted than Catholics. You can argue that those were different times and a different church, but you can't claim the Catholics have been victimized historically. Even in Britain. See: Bloody Mary.

For all those people bashing the Catholic Church about all the Crusades and the idea of Indulgences you should remenber that these people are human as well. We are all sinners (except for the Virgin mary who never sinned). Judging Catholicism based on the actions of a few people is a poor mistake. You should look at the bigger picture of what Catholics do like aid poor nations, misionaries and so on.
Second, those of you who say we need a new pope are also wrong. Our present pope is arguably the most itelligent, and interest pope we have evr had. he has produce numerous books and ideas that have revolutionized the church.
And finally for those atheists, I strongly encourage you to look at some of the proofs for the Existence of God. They are resonable and true and very easy to understand. If you don't believe in a God then if there really is one after this life you will live a eternity in hell. But, even if there isn't a God, (which is not true) then you would have lived a very moral and good life.

The Scrolls are fragments of the books of the Old Testament written prior to Christ – therefore there is no mention of either him or his Church. And there are 900 separate writings – not 3. In no way am I saying that the Pope or the Vatican is responsible for the death of tens of thousands of Africans who STARVE each year. The man has AIDS... I thought I made it pretty obvious. And in no way am I saying that the Vatican is responsible for every AIDS case in Africa.

12.84% of Africans are Catholic... I think that's pretty damn significant.

its signifigant, sure... how many of those africans do you think are A)the ones dying of aids, and B) how many more of the aids cases in africa occur in areas outside the reach of the popes influence?

my grandparents spent 8 years in mali west africa and an additional 2 in mogadishu (somolia, east africa) in the late 70's and the first half of the 80's, (just as the aids epidemic was emerging) and my parents were there (in mali) in the early 80's from what i have heard from first hand accounts, the overwhelming poverty and lack of sanitation is more to blame than anything the vatican council has ever said.

one more additional question: (and i ask in sincearity, as i am not a catholic, and am not really familiar with the vaticans standpoints that you have mentioned) but, is the teaching of the pope that safe sex and condoms are absolutley no good as a protection against aids, or do they teach that abstinance is a more sure protection? surely you cant deny that abstinance is a more sure protection, and i could see someone misconstruing that emphasis as a denouncement of safe sex, when in fact that is not the case...


like i said, this is just a guess, as i dont remember hearing any athoritative stand on the issue firsthand.

I have never said that the Vatican is respnsible for all HIV/AIDS cases in Africa. I have said that he is partly respnsible for the death of some (which I don't think has been debated???)

The Vatican altogether dismisses any evidence that condoms reduce the risk of getting HIV. How can anyone accept that? I say 'bullshit' you say 'bullshit'... but the 12% of Africans the Pope is preaching this to, accept it. They don't know any better. It's like me telling a kid to rub salt all over his bloody wound.

What are women in Africa to do about it? It's not like they have comparable rights... oh too bad for them, now they've got HIV, because the Catholic church told her partner that he shouldn't wear a condom.

Sorry, but if you can't find the argument in this... well, I guess you wouldn't mind fucking someone who has syphilis without using a condom.

i can see you arguing that the pope isnt helping... but... to say that the popes stand is the make or break, or that it is even a reason for the photos you posted is a bit hyperbolic. where does the responibility lie ultimatley? the pope preaches abstinance. if the african catholics were faithfull to his teachings, would there be aids? no. (not among that population anyways) so, i cant really blame the pope. if people are listening to him say that condoms dont work (which i dont know was ever really said) then you would think that they would listen when he says to abstain. (if they really do take him at his word as you are implying) if, however, the base human nature is to blame (which it is) then we cant demonize the catholic church for it. i wouldnt need to worry about catching syphilis due to the lack of a condom if i never had sex (with an infected person, or premaritaly) would i? so it comes down to the people involved. do they really listen to what the pope says on the issue, or do they do whatever they want? i contend that the case is the latter.

The catholic church would only do it if it was a survey about Catholics, but it is a survey that refrences religon in general. Why when anything related to christianity, or religon for that matter, do people have to lump it with the catholics

con_cept you have a huge gaping hole in your theory. If these AIDs victims were devout enough to follow the Church's teaching on condom use, then logically they would be devout enough to follow the Church's teaching on abstaining from sex outside of marriage. A Catholic so devout that they wouldn't use condoms would only have sex with one person their entire life - their spouse. One would assume that two virgins would be AIDs free. Follow?

The pictures were merely posted to grab attention to an issue that otherwise would not have been discussed. It didn’t even work the first time (which did surprise me). Over the top? Maybe. I don’t think I’ve exaggerated the truth concerning the Pope’s (Vatican’s) role in the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Africa however. His sphere of influence extends past Catholics in Africa. This becomes especially dangerous to Africans when he preaches lies. Latex condoms have been proven to be 90% effective in containing the HIV virus. The 10% ineffectiveness can be blamed on misuse. Abstinence is 100% effective, no doubt about that (again not an issue I care to argue about). In 1995, 70% of sexually active Catholics used contraceptives. This % doesn’t translate in Africa however, where Catholics are less likely to use contraceptives, and are more likely to have HIV/AIDS. In my opinion it seems that Catholics outside of Africa are able to make a well-rounded, informed decision on their use of contraceptives. Catholics living in my city are educated enough to know that what the Vatican says about condoms is completely false. If an African hears from a missionary that condoms do not protect one from STDs (Not only that but the Vatican has spread rumours that say condoms are ‘laced’ with HIV), this information is bound to spread throughout their village as ‘fact’ (not because he’s a religious ambassador, but because they expect him to know more about condoms than they do). A sexually active African isn’t going to stop having sex because his neighbour tells him that someone said having sex before marriage is a sin (what’s a sin anyways). One’s a ‘factual’ issue; the other’s a moral issue, I don’t believe they have any relation at all.

People are going to have sex. You can teach abstinence all you want; I have no problems with that. But they’re going to have sex. In order to promote abstinence to the people of Africa, the Vatican has bombarded these people with lies; and that’s what I have a problem with.
