2010/11 FD Waterproofing?

Hey Im just about making enough from NS sales and other stuff to upgrade my 2009 FD suit. Anyway, im really looking for help from 2010/11 FD owners.


The FD site says the new outerwear is 20/20k and from experience I know that some 20k/20ks can be a lot more or a lot less waterproof than others. So, how well will the 2010/11 hold up in PNW rain/sleet/wet snow conditions, especially compared to the 2009 FD.

2011 FD says 20K, but i'd rate it at "just above a tall tee in worthlessness"

yeah I was just about to ask.

because even though it gets tons of hate..the 8k FD from last year still holds up great when its truley snowing...just not in rain or heavy sleet.

i havent but i've ridden with kids who have on pow days and my 20K spyder killer stuff help up way better than his. He got mad wet. Also i've ridden with kids with saga suits in pow (this year's 3L stuff) and they stayed dry. I feel if you are going to shell out money for new outerwear go with something quality, not something that is single stitched, not seam sealed, and for gods sake not something with zip off sleeves.

If you want a super boxy suit with numerous leaks in the "waterproofing" and a suit that isn't durable at all by the looks of the numerous threads on gear talk about busted seams and rips by all means go for it. In the meantime i'll spend my money on real outerwear.

Now i'll end my FD hate with something of first drop that i do like; their tall tees. The purple and blue tall tee is money. Nice and slim and plenty tall. Plus its got a super wide collar, which makes the layering effect way cooler when layered with a tighter necked finish line tall tee.

I dont want to make this an FD hate thread..but Im checking their techspecs and it says they are "multiple stitch lines" and also "fully taped seams" on the 2011

My friends suit got soaked when we were skiing pow a month or so ago. She had this years suit, too. Keep in mind that it was dry utah snow. You're better off wearing a trash bag than FD.

dont fucking give out information when you havent owned a suit. every single statement you said is just cluttered by your ignorance.

i owned a full fd suit early in the season. shit was fucking amazing. super warm and IT WAS FUCKING WATERPROOF. i skied in the rain and didnt get wet. shit really warm too.

and i lol at everyone that says "omg liek fd durability is shit." something like 7 people have fd at my mountain and none of them have had a single problem with durabilty. i stepped all over my pants on the bottoms and the only rip i got was from clipping into my bindings by accident.

dont hate until you have owned a suit. YOU. not your friend.

Even though i havent owned the suit i've seen plenty of evidence that the suit is sub-par in relation to its competitors. My point it not less valid solely because i didnt drop 400 bucks on it. I saw the quality and the disappointment, and i talked about it. Grow up and make real points

Totally. Because every single person that disapproves of FD's quality is a saga fanboy. All we are saying is that from what we have seen, FD does not live up to its expectations or hype.

Now I haven't tried FD out at all. But from my expieriences witnessing friends expieriences with FD, They came off the mountain soaked with water even with the thermal and base layers they wore underneath it when it was dumping really dry snow. Thats enough for me to determine that FD doesn't make the cut waterproofing wise. You can continue on liking your suit. I am okay with that. Just don't get in defensive mode when someone doesn't like first drop.

No idea man, never used FD's stuff. If your 09 suit is relatively waterproof and done good by you, then the 2010 and 2011 will only be better in comparison, simple logic.

It's fine. Many powder days down I'm yet to get wet, truly wet.

It's also incredibly warm, too warm for me. On a pow day you can't have vents open (for obvious reasons) so at the bottom of the lift I'm stripping down and overheating.

Quality: nothing to write home about, but yet to fail completely.

my coat is fine, but my pants, not so much. I find the pants water proofing to be a bad joke. I always get SOAKED through my pants, and I have this years.

i have the 8k suit and i can only remeber 2 days that ive gotten wet, oneday when it was raining, and one day when it was heavy wet pow.  so this years is probably better. oh yeha PNW

ok so ill give you a review of MY suit from this year without responding to anything anyone else has said

I mainly ski in tahoe and mammoth, so when i have skiied pow this season it has been VERY wet and heavy. So far my waterproofing has been average, the day when it rained i got stuck on a chairlift in the rain for 10 minutes and when i got back down to the bottom of the run the suit was COMPLETELY soaked ONLY ON THE OUTSIDE (minus the butt, but that cant be helped when your sitting in a puddle of water), the inside of the suit (minus the butt) was very dry

on days when it is just snowing but is not raining the waterproofing holds up for me very well, sheds the snow that has melted and snow that lands on the suit never goes through the first layer, that being said, the cuffs of my pants do become EXCESSIVELY wet to the point that the water goes through to my boots/the top of my socks (although this could be due to the small rips i have from my edges cutting them) when skiing in slush/ very wet powder

contrary to belief by many previous posters in this thread, there are few "leak" spots, especially in the zip off sleeves portion of the jacket, fd did a moderate-good job at covering those up, the only complaint i have is that my zipper does not touch the starting point, leaving a dime sized hole underneith my armpit which sometimes, when i have my arms up, not stuck to my body ect. also the pants (minus the cuffs) and the jacket stay waterproof very well, and the jacket is not "single stitch" on my jacket it is stitched many times

sparknotes: FD is waterproof unless you are skiing in rain/ shin deep slush/ superwet pow

ok so i wrote that wrong, fd is waterproof when your not skiing when something is above the freezing point of water and you are skiing in it for an extended period of time
