Help analyzing a picture for my class?

also the black kids have a cat and the others have a dog suggesting a fight about to break out or something.

You could talk about their clothes, dress vs jeans.
You could say something about their curious expression towards each other.

the animals are the opposite colors of their owners. Kind of an interesting thing, why not make the cat/ dog golden or spotted?

Its actually quite an interesting picture. Here are some of my thoughts:

- You'll notice that the neighborhood children are surrounded (in composition) by  a white truck, compared to the green grass that surrounds the newcomers. Not only does this visualize the clash between races at the time, but also the dichotomy of urban and rural life.

- Also, 1 of the male children on either side is holding a baseball mitt, demonstrating the similarities that each racial group shares. The picture is about diversity, but also about commonality. Don't lose sight of the historical context of the painting either. If I'm not mistaken, this Rockwell completed this piece in the 1960's, at the height of racial tensions in the United States.

- On that note - you will also notice that two of the white children have their heads poked forward, as if examining something foreign. These may reveal the artist's own curiosity regarding African Americans and their culture.

- Compositionally, the use of stark yellows helps to create depth within the scene. There is white furniture in the foreground, a yellow shirt in the midground, and a yellow car in the background. This triangle makes the picture seem to be more 3-dimensional than it truly is.



That's all I have for now - but lord knows I could rant for a while.
