I live south of Pittsburgh at the moment, Yet, come june i plan on moving to the city. I want to save some cash, i don't plan on buying/paying for a car so i am taking the two wheel route.

I would really appreciate suggestions and such.

I am digging this one/Preferably one in this specific style, i guess its called a "hybrid"


Price range=$600 Max.

if ur spending majority of ur time on the road, get a lemond road bike. i got one and its honestly amazing, i love the thing soooo much and its so fast. just find out how big of a frame you need and take that info to ebay. you will not regret it my friend. Also, go to a bike store and try some out, road bikes, hybrids, and mountain bikes are so freakishly diferent man.

judging by the picture i would say this post was out of sarcasm but if if wasn't DO NOT DO THIS fixies are for the track and should stay there the only people who use those on the street are dumb hipsters or people who love wrecking their calves when they try to stop shit be reckless. i would run a 20" because i like doin tricks and stuff on my way to places and if you do too check out danscomp.com and there are plenty of different bikes there but if thats not your thing this wont really help ya

that bike is disgusting...

A fixie would be cool, but pittsburgh has wayyyy to many hills. and my route includes one very, very long hill...awesome for going to work, but coming home its going to suck.

A good bike for what you're seeking- it's just outside your price range, at $650ish, but it's a good bike. Get one at a shop that will make sure you buy the right size, etc.... don't strictly rely on NS. These are suggestions, your local shop will be able to help you out much more easily. And when I say local shop, I don't mean REI. A bike shop.

And there are quite a few very nice bike shops around. I just wanted to get some opinions from you guys since i would imagine there are quite a few bikers on here.

Yeah, I work at a shop in California. Of all the bikes I put together in your price range, that one sees the fewest problems down the road, it's light, and it is an all-around good bike. I don't see them come back to the shop as often as any other bike, and they usually come from the factory without problems, which helps eliminate the possibility that an incompetent builder put it together without fixing something that wasn't perfect to begin with.

I think you're right at looking at hybrids. best of all worlds for your needs.

adding to what was already said, I would go find a reputable shop and speak to them there to assess your options.

my advice on buying?

BUY USED (good condition obviously).

from where? look for used stock (or demo) at bike shops. the condition is going to be great usually, and you'll save hundreds of dollars.

bump... some good info in this thread already.   Any opinions on a hybrid bike. My optimal price range is ~$400.. max I can go is 5 bills maybe...  I went to look today at the local bike shops but nothing was open on Sunday.  I am hoping for a great used deal but are there any brands I can seek out that will be new for that price??  I wanted to avoid dicks sporting goods and shop local, I am so afraid of buying a shit bike.  They had diamondbacks and Nishiki bikes that felt comfortable but I don't want to get got... Any experience with these?

the bike OP posted is exactly what you want, assuming you got something like it considering this post is pretty old, if you are still looking for a bike try www.pinkbike.com. its like newschoolers but for bike people.
