Need your opinion on a fun ski event....

Ok so here's the background. Every year we have our university games. The events are GS, Slalom, slopestyle and skiercross. This is just the state champs so the events are limited. The slopestyle is usually pretty good fun but we have a little bit of a problem.

A lot of the people don't like slalom. So (as one of the team managers) i want to replace it with something else. Half pipe is out of the question, as is big air. Some of the good riders would be fine with it but this needs to cater for everyone. Im thinking of some sort of "fun" competitive event thats not as serious as the others.

Any suggestions? Anyone had experience with a relay-type event? Or a giant slalom with a cross over? Dont mind how creative you are...just want some ideas. Thanks

I just helped coached a slope style comp today, it was great.  Just have a comp with some judges, and score 'em.

you find a spot on the mountain with a bunch of drops or u have a couple of judges at each hit and you get awarded points for the size of the drop the tricks u pull of it and youre landing

the problem with these is if you have a variety of ages, the person who weighs the most will go the farthest, so it is kinda unfair to the 80 lb 8 year olds...

its more fun on a day with a lot of powder so then it dosnt hurt much if u screw up th landing and that makes the contestants whant to take more risks

sorry i forgot to mention a few things...

im in australia. the closest we get to powder is wizz fizz.

drops are a great idea, and we do have some, but we're talking about university students ranging from olympians down to people who snow plough around the GS gates. its really more about participation so a drops comp is out :(

we already have a slopestyle event. another freeski event is sort of out of the question :(

there are themed parties every night with prizes for costumes. looking for something that's still snow-oriented.

a stage race.

race 1/4 of the way down the hill-change clothes station, race 1/4 of the way down the hill-eat 6 saltine crackers w/ no water, race 1/4 of the way down the hill-take skis off and spin around 10 times, ski to the finish!

Yeah I think you need an apres ski event at the bar the night after. Just hit the pub and judge it the next morning on who had the best night/pulled the hottest chick/worst hangover/most shrimp thrown on the barbie etc.

might have come up with the most epic idea ever....

Mass start
ski/board down
run up
ski/board down
run up
ski/board down to finish where the winner of each div would get a prize from the existing sponsors.

the lap couldn't be massive because i still want to encourage participation, but essentially its still a competitive event. id want there to be say 4 gates to make the run down a little bit more interesting. just a wide zig zag so you cant chinese down hill it.

the advantage is you can run it at the end of the day, there's virtually no course prep except for 4 gates and its a quick event to run. do a mass start of all the skiers at once and all the boarders at once, or even EVERYONE at once. it wouldnt really matter because the points would still be awarded in difference disciplines kind of like cross country.

Pond Skimming is always a ton of fun. Vail does one every year and people wear crazy costumes. You could do something like that.

... but on a serious note.  I agree with others on a rail jam with a beginner feature like a really fat box.  Something that those with skills can get creative with, but it won't kill anyone.
