This edit is sick, but at 0:32 do you call that a fakie ollie or a switch nollie? Cos like I think I understand skateboarding enough to know that "switch nollie" is an oxymoron.

yeah I know, Its not really considered switch though is it? Cos your riding fakie not switch right... So the flaw I'm seeing is that if you can do a fakie ollie on skis we must have chosen the wrong name for going backwards no?

Okay so this is how skate boarding works

You're riding normal right, call it right foot forward.
Turn 180 so you're riding left foot forward. That's switch.

If you move up on the board when you're riding normal so that you're popping off the nose, that's a nollie. Because it's a switch ollie, (sliding your back foot forward up to ollie instead of the right one) ya dig?

If you do the same thing while riding switch it's just a fakie ollie because you're still doing an ollie with you're natural foot.

Am I making sense? haha

Yeah, I mean it works if you ignore what it means in skateboarding, but I see it as slightly disrespectful to take something they've named and change its meaning. Like I can't see skiing changing the words we use without a struggle, I just think that maybe we should consider it.

This isn't the newest argument ever. I've always prefered cab than switch or fakie. We ended up stealing it from snowboarding, which is silly becasue even snowboarders don't often go switch.
It's technically possible, if you had the right stance set up, but most boarders don't have thier feet set up symetrically, so they are pretty much always going fakie.
With skis, going backwards (switch as it is now known) is so completely different from going switch or fakie in skating and snowboarding, that to me, stealing terms from them is just a pathetic suck up to the sports that ultimately inspire skiing.
We have always been a few years behind snowboarding in terms of trends, and snowboarding has always been a few years behind skating, but taking words from them and changing the meaning so much is pretty stupid. So cab it should be. But switch is now so ingrained in the culture and has now taken on a new meaning, so i guess its here to stay.

fakie ollie is the exact same as a switch nollie i.e. skiing regular and popping of the front of your skis is a nollie. skiing switch and popping off the front of your skis is a switch nollie aka fakie.

So I understand cab is good for spins in both still, like a skater would say cab front 5 or so we should say we ski fakie up to the kicker and do a cab right 5 if were to take the definition properly.
But i was also told you can just say a trick is fakie in skateboarding too and it means the same thing.

i dont think you have any idea what you're talking about. whatsoever. every snowboarder who rides park has their board set up completely symmetrical. and its not stealing terms, its just using something that is already around and applying it to your sport. pretty basic concept to grasp.

Did you read my post where I acknowledged that and said that is not the issue? I suggested we can easily use the words the way we do just that it could be considered disrespectful to skateboarding to take the words they created and change the meanings.
I made this thread to show that they already had appropriate ones for what we need them for, someone just choose the wrong ones. Now our way of using the words has come to a point where they do not make sense in the context of their creation.

It's about words having one accepted meaning, unity and respect.

This is what I thought when I read that post. The thread is about applying it correctly. I can see that the majority or skiers don't care that one guy in this thread is passionate about not caring but I just want things to make sense.
I hate when I name a trick and I sort of stop and think, wait is that right? Will someone call me out on that? If these words meant the same in every sport that used them then it would be fine, I could name any trick in any sport and not have to worry.(except fs/bs boardslides, i'll never get my head around that)

Sweet so I'm sleepy and hungover but let me try get this straight.

To be honest, its a fucking long time since I last skated, so I'll admit to actually getting all the terminology pretty wrong. And the problem is, in snowboarding, switch has now come to mean riding backwards (wrong foot forward), REGARDLESS of weather your board is symetrically set up. Not the hugest deal in the world, I don't really watch enough snowboarding to tell the difference between a symetrical setup and a non symetrical when casually watching it.

And I understand exactly HOW skiing got the term switch, but at the same time, taking something and completely re-defining it and twisting its meaning so much makes no sense to me. Snowboarding getting it from skating, all good. The same concept still applies, but the problem is in skiing, we dont have a board you are standing sideways on, we have two that you stand straight on. So the whole term gets completely fucked.

A few other sports (besides boardsports) use fakie to mean going backwards, so that still makes more sense than switch. But switch caught on, so I guess thats what we are stuck with. It's become so ingrained that even people like me, who get all shitty about it, use it all the time. It now just gets confusing when people start to do crazy shit in edits.

I think you'd be correct call that a switch ollie? And it could totally be done. The confusion will arise, it already does, you cant just name a trick anymore without someone wanting to call it something different. I find it anoying.
