 how does an avi lung work? u cant move your arms to put a  breath mask or anything to your face. and to ski around with something in your mouth (no homo) all the time would be annoying as fuck id imagine.

well it intakes air from all up and down the device and then expels it when you exhale from the bottom. its not that unobtrusive, it straps on diagonally just like a backpack stap, or some people actually build it into one of their pack straps with a knife and a little duct tape. you can see the first guy who he sees when he is uncovered wearing one diagonally and the mouthpiece comes right up by his cheek

and ive never been in an avalanche but i always thot if i was, i could like dig out or something which obviously isnt the case. can you like not move because of how pact the snowpack is or somethig?

plus is so the co2 gets dispersed behind you so you don't breath as much in. and HOLY CRAP that was so scary, i can't imagine being in there and feeling that helpless.

You are assuming you can even tell which way it up. You get so discombobulated it is hard to tell which way the sky is. But yes, it is hard to move in snowpack as well. But lastly, staying still maintains your oxygen a lot better I believe. I know almost nothing about avalanches, but I think you are supposed to just lay there.

Not just hard to move it is absolutely impossible. The snow sets up like concrete you are not able to do anything. And in the case of an avilung it is set up to sit right next to your mouth and when the hillside breaks you put the tube in your mouth you dont ride around with it in.

he was dug out in 4:28 after the avalanche happens, which is ridiculously fast. the sound he was making was him struggling to breathe becasue the avalung was knocked away from his mouth, so he only had it half in his mouth. some of the noise is also his chest moving up and down from breathing so hard.

and it is like digging through concrete to get out. think about shoveling the driveway when it has a foot of snow on it, only about five times as much snow and having to do it with one arm at a time.

Yeah, that USC edit freaks me out. Just dropped a cliff and got buried. And that snow was so deep his friend could barely climb through it. Definitely scary to think about, deep snow/tree wells.

The first thing you want to do if caught in a slide is make sure your poles are out of your hands and your skis are off your feet. You shouldnt be skiing in the backcountry with your pole straps on. Granted getting your skis/poles off during a slide is a lot easier said than done. But you dont want anything on your arms and legs that can get caught in snow flow and twist your body in all sorts of interesting directions. But if you can get your hand up before the snow settles then by all means do it. The more you fight before the snow settles the better chance you have.

once your skis are off, try and swim like you would through water. it will help you stay on top of the slide and (slightly) in control of what is happening. best case senario

Spit. Although keeping any space around your chest/face is much easier said than done. Probably something you can prepare a ton for, but never really fully know the power until caught in one. Scary shit, was this footage bonus in one of the RAGE films from a couple years ago?
