T2i lens question

Thinkin about picking up one possibly but would not have enough dough to get an additional lense other then the 18-55 kit lens. I am new to dslrs and just basicaly wanted to know if the kit lens is usable in many different situations, particularly filming skiing. and also when i do get a new lens what should be the first I go for?

Its usable, but the 18-55 kit lens is probably the worst lens canon makes. If you get a 50mm 1.8, which is 90-100 bucks brand new, that will be a nice starter lens too along with your kit lens.

The lens will work if that is all you can afford. My favorite lens for shooting skiing is the 70-200 IS 2.8. You can't use the zoom on the kit lens without getting exposure shifts. For now that lens will work just fine though. Shoot with what you can afford and take it from there.

Sigma 18 - 50 f2.8 is a great upgrade

zoom and focusing are internal so the lens doesnt change in length ever.

the HSM also makes focusing very quiePr

true, the 50mm f/1.8 is great (i have the 50mm f/1.4 myself), but you have to also keep in mind that the T2i is a crop sensor camera, meaning that the 50mm is going to act more like an 80mm, making it pretty tight and hard to film with if not on a tripod or very good with a glidecam. for a wider lens that will act like a 50mm, i suggest looking into the Sigma 30mm f/1.4.

I have Canon's 17-55mm f/2.8 lens, it's amazing. However, it's really expensive so another good one, as i believe kelsey suggested, is the tamron 18-55 f/2.8

just wondering, but wouldn't he want something wider than a 50mm to compensate for the 1.6x crop? I had heard the the sigma 30mm f1.4 was a pretty popular lens for the t2i, but it is like $440 (not that much compared to others, but half the cost of his camera with the kit lens)

anyone else know anything about this?

So if i just buy the body and the Tamron 17 - 50 f 2.8 , would that be a good setup? Are the tamron lenses good lenses? And also with the tamron lens would the 2.8 aperture eliminate the exposure changes when zooming that happens with the kit lens? ( I have been playing around with a friends with a kit lens and i hate it for that reason!)

i don't know how good the lens is, never used it. but that focal length/speed will be a good lens for many different uses. i use my 17-55mm f/2.8 for just about everything. and yea, the aperture won't change while zooming. that only happens when the speed is a range (such as f/3.5-5.6) not when it's a single number (such as f/2.8).

We own a few sigma lenses and they are quality. We use their 10mm fish and 10-20 wide angle. I like them alot.

I bought the 17-50 about a month ago and love it! Its super sharp and you can find them pretty cheap on ebay.

Tamron 17-50 is a nice lens. Ive read reviews that say its sharper than the canon 17-40l, and for about half the price.


just be sure to buy the NON vc version. the one with vc is significantly less sharp.

Do you guys think as my first and only lens it would be best to have the tamron 17-50 2.8 or I have found a really good deal on craiglist for a tamron 28-75 2.8

A Pentax 50mm SMC 1.4 will absolutely slay any prime mentioned in this thread, and they cost around $100.

nope. just need an adapter ring. only need to mod on full frame. and even then its super simple.


and to mtshred, yeah the vc is more expensive, but its actually less sharp. something with the vc throws off the elements just enough to make them not line up perfectly or something. idk the exact reason, i just know its proven that the vc is less sharp.

16-85 is my favourite zoom range for shooting snow sports, you might want to look into one
