Come on people, Making good anything isn't easy. No matter what it is, dubstep, paintings, graphic design, ect. The ignorance is outstanding in this thread. (my palm comes to my face as i sigh heavily and shake my head is disapproval)
I see your points, there are an incredible amount of people just throwing together sounds from various sample packs and calling it "dubstep" or "electro". There are DJ's that have pre-recorded sets and just rage on stage with mad bitches (Like this fucker, DJ Blend,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq76j8LBO3k)
Seriously, All he does is dance around in his bedroom, shirtless, to these pre-recorded sets and he gets paid 800 dollars everytime he "DJ's" because he has a huge following. Nothing in the world of music makes me more pissed than DJ Blend...
I will have to agree with you, there are some people out there calling themselves, "producers" or "DJ's" yet, there is some real stuff out there.
Lets look at MSTRKRFT for instance, every sound they create comes from hardware, I am not going to waste my time talking about it, check out this video of ALP from mstrkrft making a track in his studio.
How could one say that doesn't take musical talent? yeah, the music it self is quite simple, yet, the serious amount of talent comes into play when designing the specific sound you want to use, mixing the audio/midi channels so everything fits together nicely, mastering the song so it doesnt sound like shit on a big system, there are so many components to making electronic dance music that are so often overlooked because when it is performed live, it looks like they are doing absolutely nothing. Pretty much all the work is in the studio. And as far as the live performance, aka DJing, DJing is an art just like making the music, there are more shitty DJ's out there than good, but it takes a certain amount of skill to read the crowd and know what tunes to drop next. Because if you drop the wrong song, you can loose that crowd in an instant, like Skrillex is a horrible, god awful DJ, one of the worst sets i have ever seen, MSTRKRFT on the other hand, played one of the best sets i have ever heard. Its not easy being good at DJing/Producing.
I am a Electro producer/DJ under the name "Comic Strips". Making just one song and having sound good takes hours upon hours. Between designing the sounds you want to use (For every new tune, I design a new sound), to making sure all the frequencies are playing nice together. to making it a catchy song that will grab attention of blogs, labels, and the crowd when dropping it live, and not to mention easily the hardest part, Mixing the track down so everything fits together in a nice listenable way then mastering it so it sounds nice on any system you play it on, from a car stereo system to a huge 15k watt system.
Know your stuff before you say anything is easy. Making a good product, no matter what it is, is never easy.
Sincerely,
Tom
