Dubstep rant

I wish we could all take a step back and think about where all this music came from. Ill be the first to admit that i get excited about a new rusko or skrillex track just as much as the other guy but it seems to be loosing touch with it roots really fast. Its called DUBstep for a reason. Its true roots are dub music which is a predecessor to reggae as we know it today.....Imagine if you dropped "scary monsters and nice spirits" on Lee Scratch Perry and told him that his music would one day inspire this madness.

apparently not, that was mostly a shot in the dark. That rant is just kinda dumb and not particularly humorous to someone who as actually experienced the rave scene. (even as someone who hates on raves a lot like myself) Its just a broad generalization of electronic music. And what do we know about broad generalizations??? They suck.

Well I think you should take a look at what hes done for music before you start bashing on him.

well i mean punk rock and cocaine go hand in hand thats all im saying...and drugs don't make you cool, but if used responsibly you can have a really good time.

and using responsibly means be a smart drug user. I'm going to explain this by saying what not to do:

-DON'T go around trying to prove you're the shit by taking as many drugs as you can because you can fucking OD/get hooked on drugs because you can literally ruin your life and you make us smarter drug users look like fucking idiots when you use irresponsibly

-DON'T ingest anything that you don't know what it is. do your research and know what you're taking before you take it.

-DON'T do hard drugs often. I've seen too many kids become e-tarded from overuse in a short span of time.

-DON'T do stupid shit like meth, heroine, crack... that shit will literally kill you. stick to psychadelics and mdma.

-DON'T be a bitch, make sure to have the greatest time possible while on.

two outstanding live bands that play their originally written dubstep with REAL instruments. I believe they both have guitars as well for boring old man up there as well.

calm down. i'm a guitarist,pianist, and amateur engineer, studied jazz theory for most of my career, but saying that kids that make electronica don't show any musicianship or musicality is ridiculous, ignorant, and very close minded.

THANK YOU. I wanna know how many people that claim electro musicians talentless, or not musicians have actually tried to make it. Even making SHITTY electro takes a lot of time and practice, and making "good" electro requires that, and quite a bit of knowledge of music theory.

Music ran away from it's roots so fast. Think back to when Ug the caveman was making the first music by banging two rocks together, which was inspired by the chirping of birds. What would he think of classical music? It progressed too fast! Seriously, things progress. It happens. Roots are roots and not whatever something has been progressed to for a reason.

not really. good electro stuff can be made pretty easily by just jamming over a drumbeat. as far as movement of the music into different parts of the song goes i guess i can see where you're coming from...but seeing as most electro artists go with 16 bar chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus type formats (just generalizing) it really doesn't take much musicianship to make it .

i guess it takes a tiny bit of musical understanding to make it but thats it. live bands however usually switch it up and can take a 4/4 time lick, and jam it into a 7/6 and back into 4/4 and so on and make it sound flawless. the possibilities are endless with a live band but with electro since only one person is controlling everything it's hard to do that kind of musically complex stuff.

hell, electro artists don't even play their music live they just spin it into a DJ set in a DJ program.

that does not classify as good electro. and your last statement is somewhat wrong. everything is and used to be cdjs and decks, with only a minority using computers, but A LOT more people are migrating towards controllers (including myself). its not just about playing your songs and mixing them together anymore. its about making/playing a different variation of the song each time you play it. its the way of the future. so enough with the whole 'electronic artists get paid to do nothing on stage' shit, i can assure you that is not correct.

(inb4 Kota and Wambat telling me i dont know what im talking about)

Again we're talking about single tracks, not someone playing tracks  out live. therefore we're talking about PRODUCERS not DJ's. What medium djs are playing out on doesn't really have anything to do with this topic.

he was/is (not sure which one, since he has moved on to creating things independently) a top developer for Native Instruments, and pretty much designed most of the new Traktor Kontrol S4 controller by himself, which is the pinnacle of controllers at the moment in my opinion.

side note: traktor scratch pro 2 coming out soon, fuck yes

I know you're on topic with AlexG, but AlexG isn't on topic which basically means you're not (not hating :)  ). You're telling me that playing a DJ set, in a busy club, is the same as Producing single track in the studio? No fucking way!

Furthermore, you don't find many dubstep dj's using ableton or any other controllers there maybe, so you're getting even more off the topic. That's what I'm saying.

kid, you're twisting my words/not listening to what i am saying. you are the third person to misinterpret my words when i rant about this.

first off, i didn't say it was the SAME. i was just pointing out that using a controller live is a form of producing because generally a song is chopped and screwed to a point where each time you play it it will sound different. in my eyes that is a form of producing.

secondly, i said there will be a large move to controllers in the FUTURE (key word: future). its starting to just happen now really, so of course you aren't going to see many people using them

thirdly, where did ableton come from? fuck that, how about using a proper program such as traktor or serato (traktor>serato btw, especially when TSP 2 gets released)

I'm not a kid first of all. Yes I guess you in a way are correct, but someone must have created the song that you are chopping and screwing? They are the producer in my eyes. Whoever is using traktor, serato, whatever is just a dj (whatever you want to call someone using a controller), taking someone's or their own PRODUCTION and modifying it differently.

Yeah, i know what you mean. but most people dont know the skill it takes to fully be comfortable with every feature on a newer age controller. ean golden, who i mentioned before, was really the man who switched me over to controllers (i was originally going to upgrade my cdj900s to a couple of 2000s, went with a traktor s4 instead). and i tell you what, these things are hard to master. ok look at it this way: a producer creates a song by manipulating sound/instrument patterns to form music that is a certain tempo, that has a unique beat pattern etc. what is someone on a controller doing then? exactly the same, except they are making the song on the spot, with only a small chance for error. even though they start a step up with pre made (generally) drum/synth etc patters, the matter of putting it all together somewhat perfectly under pressure outweighs it. now im not saying all people who own a controller will be using it at an expert level yet, but the ones who do give us a glimpse at what the future of producing/dj'ing will be like.

Lets not forget EOTO for live improvised Dubstep. No one can deny Micheal Travis and Jason Hann are incredibly talented.
Its kinda hard to understand without going to a full show, but it is a really crazy party...
