How much to charge?

Hey guys,

I was recently sent a message on facebook by an acquaintance of mine from the longboard world. He runs http://www.unkle.ca and puts on the "Brittania Beach Gold Rush" race every year; at least for the last three. The race boasts over 1000m of vertical in 3.5 km's. It's kind of a big deal.

IF you longboard, these guys showed up last year.

Patrick Switzer
James Kelly
Erik Lundberg
Louis Pilloni
Mischo Erban
Nate Lang
etc.

So, kind of a big deal right?

Anyways, Lee would like to "use" one of my photos for the event's poster this year. I am obviously going to ask for compensation, as this is a large scale event. How much would you guys say is appropriate?

If you have not sold a photo or other media rights before, you need not apply.

Dude you can charge whatever you want. Just don't go extremely overboard and don't just kinda shrugg and be like a dollar

it could go 1 of 2 ways.
1. you ask for money, and it goes well
2. he doesn't want to pay you in money as your payment would be "exposure"

but as far as how much, it kind of depends, do people have to buy tickets to the event? if so how much are they? and how many people usually go?
I can see anywhere from like 100-500$

You are giving him one photo that you already have, it's not a shoot. That said what you are offering is closest comparable to selling stock photography. A high res stock photo goes for around $10-$20 from the big depositories. Since you have something this guy wants (and a not so common stock subject), you could obviously ask for a more than that. Just don't go overboard because the exposure is pretty valuable if you are just starting out.

I doubt he's willing to pay any more than $150 for a single photo, and that may be pushing it. Good luck though, it's never easy to make the decision; You are either going to risk losing the exposure, or feel like you are selling yourself short.

Bullshit. Stock libraries are a good place to get a grasp of what to charge though. Search www.corbis.com and www.alamy.com for any rights-managed image and fill out the usage form to get an idea of what it would cost them for a good stock image to use at whatever size/quantities/purpose they're looking for. If you want an actual number, absolute minimum $300. More like $500-1000 if this is 100+ large posters.
