So I want to move to Utah...

I moved here blind about a month ago from plattsburgh.  I had a few friends living in sugarhouse so i stayed with them till i found a spot.  Ended up finding (though NS actually) a place in cottonwood heights.  Im about as close as you can get to the Big Cottonwood Canyon road without living in it.  Unless you are really into the bar and party scene id deffanatly reccomend this area.  If your looking for a resort job both the cottonwood canyons are right here, if you looking for something down in the city, its a bit of a hike but i think it'd be worth it.

As for skiing, if you have any friends that are already here get what ever passes they are getting.  I did that and got Park City and snowbird.  If i had to do it again i probably would have settled for just a brighton pass.  The park there is deffanatly on par with the top EC resorts, and the terrain seems mad fun (i have only been there once so i cant make a perfect judgement).  I love snowbird, fast steep technical stuff but sometimes id like to play around on some more pillows and medium size drops, brighton has plenty of that, a little mellower which kinda sucks but i kinda wish i saved the money and killed 2 birds with one stone.  Park city is fun for the park, thats about it imo (again havent explored the mtn there just the parks so i dont know if my judgement is the best)

It kind of depends on where you want to ski, or what you want to do with your time. If you're looking for a pseudo legit job, and like to party and ski park, you may be able to afford a place in PC. There are pretty cheap places around Prospector Square. Park City is the most "normal" town in Utah. it seems to be the most liberal, and partying there is fun. There are a lot of bars, and everything is close.

SLC is pretty huge. There are a lot of great neighborhoods. If you want to ski Alta/Bird or Brighton/Solitude then live in Cottonwood Heights or Sandy. Both of those are great areas, close to skiing, and still enough fun things to do. Sugarhouse is close to the highway, decently close to down town, etc.

So, it really depends on the job you get and where you ski. No matter where you are, you won't be more than 45 minutes from skiing.

I just want to be able to gain some good work experience while skiing the greatest snow on Earth! Haha. Also, if you guys know of any sweet companies/jobs, I would love to hear about that. I am constantly checking out Backcountry.com for job openings, but they generally seem to be a senior level. Hard to get that experience when you need it to get in anywhere.

and to add to that , i live in holladay/east millcreek and its an awesome little place. close to 33rd and 39th lots of shopping and restaurants.sugar house is pretty close too, pick your location based off your canyon choice, i'd rather be in sandy now that i drive up LCC every single day

So Sandy is a better location for driving into LCC? How far is the Sugarhouse area from the LCC resorts? I also heard the roads close more frequently because of the generally heavier snowfall in the Little canyon, so has that factored into any of your living decisions?

the canyon closures would only come into choosing where you live if you wanted to be first on the lineup at the gate when it opens and you get a close place (sandy, cottonwood heights), but that's the same as living close to get up early every day. bcc closes way less than lcc (it's like the most avalanche prone road in the states that's open 12 months a year or something like that so they do a lot of control work on it)

there are a lot of good places to live in slc, but some bad ones too. google the neighborhood if you want to know more. i go to the U and i live between there and downtown, and it's still not a big deal to drive up. you just have to be aware of the road closure situation and leave at the right time. slc is a fun city, i like living more downtown, i just have to drive a bit further to get up there.

when you are looking for a place to work do you mean as a job or a career? are you looking to get into the wintersports industry? because if you do, don't discount ogden. it's like 45 min north of slc, and the mayor is trying to re-brand the city as the outdoor action sports capitol of the west, and part of that means there are TONS of companies with headquarters there in the ski industry (solomon, DNA, etc...) and outside the ski/snowboard world. skiing is there, there are two good resorts (snowbasin and powder mountain) just up ogden canyon right outside town, good climbing/bouldering up there too if you're into that. there's still tons of opps in slc for "industry" gigs, but it's not a bad move to check out ogden and see if any of the desirable companies are even looking for employees.

if you're just looking for a job, there are tons in slc, you just have to be proactive and go out and get them.

If you want to live around alot of young people and have equal access to PC and the cottonwoods, I'd get a place near the u. There are always parties and things going on, there are prettty nice houses for relatively cheap, and there are tons of job oppurtunities on campus.

As for passes, I personally won't be getting the PC/Alta combo again, mainly because I'm not a huge fan of park skiing. I do throroughly enjoy the park at brighton since they put some more creative features, and have things other than downbars/rails. I'm either going to get Alta/Bird or Alta/Brighton next year.

If you are looking for a place in PC, def dont shy away because of Price. I work from home and opted to move up here to be closer to some clients and have a nice quiet place to focus and work, ended up finding a really cheap and nice place at the top of Parley's in the Pinebrook neighborhood.

Def not too expensive to live up here, and I save a ton of money on Gas when I go to ski now, eliminating going up and down a canyon in your car def helps me get to skiing faster, and helps on storm days, even though I still find myself driving to Brighton to shred occasionally.

Park City is quassi normal, although its a little odd sometimes, there is a lot of money up here, quite an interesting lifestyle to observe.

I am not looking for a career persay, but I would not mind building experience in the two fields my major is concentrated in (marketing/finance). My ultimate dream job would be in the snowsports/skiing industry doing marketing or a brand manager, or even corporate finance for a parent, but those are definitely career paths and not just building blocks.

So basically I am hoping to open some doors, gain some experience and ski some famous Utah snow all at the same time. I will check out the areas in Sandy, and in SLC and near U of U. It all sounds pretty awesome to be honest. I currently live in Burlington, VT if any of you have ever been here, and I like this atmosphere. Half college kids, half adults/professionals. Its a nice mix that caters to the "college" lifestyle and providing avenues to advance in a professional career.

I would love to move to somewhere at least ~25mi within the SLC this Oct/Nov, or next year (2012) Oct/Nov (as I've been told that's the best time).

Are there any websites with places to live in park city? I've been looking but haven't really found anything useful online.

I'll be honest alot of SLC sucks to live in because it's generally boring generic suburb living, and trust me that shit gets old fast. If i was you i'd move to south salt lake somewhere off of state street or somewhere directly west of the city. It may be dirty but at least it's got some fucking character. When searching for a house live in a mexican neighborhood, you'll have alot more fun. Unless you're a pussy in which case they'll probably kill you. Also stay away from sandy the place is boring as fuck.

I'd way rather live in a boring suburban neighborhood than surrounded by sketch mexis.

I don't really mind not being down town and living in a "boring" suburban neighborhood. I have lived in a college town the last 2 1/2 years here at UVM, so I really wouldn't mind living somewhere quiet, and not having people stop and throw up on my porch and finding litter all over every weekend morning, haha.

My best friend lives in Sugarhouse and she's 30 minutes from Park City and a little more to Alta. I'm currently staying at my friends house in Sandy and it's 52 minutes to Park City and 35 minutes to Alta.


Sandy's too far out IMO... (Then again I live in Breck and can walk to the gondola. Not use to so much driving.)

I'm used to driving over an hour to get to the mountain, so both those times are an improvement, haha.

and youre talkin about 10x better skiing :)
