Macbook/iTunes Question

I was just wondering if it would be safe to delete all the mp3's from my Downloads folder if I have an extra copy in the iTunes Media Folder? Would my iTunes still be able to play all the music on there, or does it need that original source file?

as long as the mp3's are in the itunes media folder then you're set
