New powder skis

I am trying to find a new powder ski. i am torn between a soft playful ski and something stiffer but i think i have decided to go with something stiffer. a ski i was looking at were the Moment Night Trains.
I am 6ft tall 175 lbs and will be using these in bounds and some minor backcountry and slackcountry. i want to be able to have good float but expect to have to charge through crud and make quick turns in the trees too. Just looking for some advice.

You Basically Have a few options that you could go with!!!!! Armada JJ 185(is stiff enough to charge in crappy crud conditions, but still has some softness to do some backcountry jibbing) Line SF Bacon(This ski is very playful, basically the little brother of the EP tip and tail rocker for float and a medium flex umder foot) 4frnt EHP (bomber ski can be taken anywhere!!!!!!!!!!! CHARGE HARD and float) these skis are all different but they all could serve your needs!!!!!

^^ They are 121 underfoot, rocker tip and tail, so you can ride pow switch but they have some good stiffness so that you can really charge through all kinds of crud. I have the 191s

I'd go with the Armada JJs, Moment Bibby Pros, Atomic Bent chetler, or 4frnt crj. I own JJ's and I love them, they do well in anything and they're playful but stiff enough for any conditions. I've ridden the Bibby's and they were pretty similar to the JJs i liked them equally if not more. bentchetlers and crjs aren't too different from what I've heard. All of these are also good skis if you're thinking of putting touring bindings on for some slack country.

I'll go ahead and say what I always say.

Surface One Life at 189.

I'm your size man. I've been skiing on them since last year, and getting some new ones next season. They absolutely throw down. Amazing float, crazy ass rocker and pretty stiff.
I love mine, it's my one ski quiver. I take them everywhere I go and never have a problem. They can hold an edge at high speeds, don't chatter and yea. My thought train is going somewhere else here.
In a nutshell, it's a very playful ski, I jib mine everywhere, super stable at landings, not the strongest in park, but it seems you're looking for a powder ski, so nothing to worry about there.
It's a great overall ski. You'll just get the stares from the rocker...that's all you have to lose.

Deal with not having pow skis for the rest of this year so that you can wait and purchase JJ AK's next year. JJ's are really sick and a lot of fun, but coming from an aggressive skier who likes to charge crud and firmer conditions along with pow, the 185 isn't always enough for someone our size. JJ AK on the other, no problem.

check out the volkl gotama or rossi s7 -- both are dope skis & on the stiffer side--float in the pow but snappy in the trees/will charge through crud. i ski the gotamas as my everyday ski cause they engage well on groomers too--honestly, the only thing they suck on are big, tight bumps. granted i'm approximately 5 inches shorter and 55lbs lighter, but all the guys i know who ski either of these are really into them.

alright thank you all for the advice and after some reading up on the suggestions i am strongly leaning towards the caylors. however what size? 181 or 191?

i have the moment night trains and they are the best skis ive ever ridden. perfect width and stiffness. i can hit huge cliffs and also its good for jibbing. defantely egt the night trains. but if you put the skis on the ground to hard when putting them away the tips or tails get cracked becuase of no edge so be carefull with them when not skiing

my sis rides night trains she loves them she gets so much float and the rocker makes them super nimble, and with the flat camber she cruised pretty well on hard pack

i love my chopsticks, if they are tuned well and have sharp edges u can ski them almost any day of the year. They float super nice and are fun in the trees

At your size I would get the 191 caylors, there is a reason everyone loves them. They are quick when you need them to be, and charge when its time to point it. No floppy tips here.

I'll say 189 One Lifes as well. There deep snow performance is a given, but I never cease to be amazed by there versatility everywhere else as well. With these you can charge, jib, slash, spin, what have you in pretty much any snow conditions.

I have 10-11 night trains as well and they are simply amazing. They charge and float, but still playful. I can butter around on them with some effort. The most suprising thing about them is how they handle on harder snow; they shred. I rode some hellbents on a couple of groomers and found them to be pretty squirrely. But the night trains were super stable. I actually had fun carving around on groomers on my way back to the lift. Highly recommend them, they might be my favorite ski ever.

'09 JJ's were super soft i think but i have '10's and they are plenty stiff and go through crud really well.

I think threads like this are funny since most people just list the skis that they have, and say its great. It's funny since this is probably due to us all just loving skiing so much, that we are guaranteed to have fun regardless of what we are on...







That said get the caylors.

well the best knowledge of the gear come from the people who have truly tested that piece of gear everyday they can. They know how it works. If it's something one of us have never tried, we give our general idea on how it'll perform.

That's where the general understanding on how another ski works comes into play.

By default, people are going to say the ski they have. They just know it and generally want other people to experience the love they have for it.

I'm going to go ahead and put in another vote for One Lifes. The ski is absolutely amazing! They float in pow, blast through crud, rip groomers with ease and feel nice in the air. Never before have I had so much fun on snow. The best thing about the skis are the people and looks they bring, I've had people as young as 4 come up and just stare at them haha. Last weekend I was on the chair with a guy who must have been at least 70, we talked in the lift line and the whole ride up about my "water skis". I could go on but I think you get it.

How much you weigh there killer? see the guy asking the question in this thread is 6' 175lb. While not huge, he is still not a feather weight. What might flop like a granpa's dick to him would be plenty stiff for a little kid.

I'm 6'2" 165lb and ride the JJ and they aren't floppy at all. I don't think 10lb would make them flop like grandpa's dick at all. They should be plenty stiff and would be a great ski for pretty much all conditions.

get a stiff ski with plenty of rocker. if you are in pow any ski with rocker becomes nice soft and jibby if it has rocker. but you will need that stiffness when the pow gets chopped.

I really never understood why you would get a soft pow ski. you need a soft ski when you have something to push against to flex the ski. when you are in pow, you dont have anything to really push against, hence the floating feeling.

If you want something stiff and somewhat playful, get the 190 Bibby Pro. I've been on them for the past 2+ seasons with over 80 days on them, around 30-40 in the backcountry. With the amount of tip and tail rocker on them, you can smear your turns and shut down speed in a split second, but with a stiff flex and camber underfoot, they charge hard in all conditions, even firm snow and crud.

i just skied surface One Lifes in a 189 for the first time, LOVED it so much fun, so easy to ski, it was a 20cm day at whistler and they rocked the shit out of it

To be honest all of the above ski models are awesome powder skis....you can't go wrong with any of them...

I can vouch for the Bibby it has an awesome shape and is well made. The Caylor has lots of fans and no detractors (that are brave enough to say anything in a public forum anyway), the Keeper is truely awesome balance between stiff and playfull...etc...

Don't sweat it too much .... they are all good skis.

6'1" 185....... They aren't floppy at all the tip and tail are decently stiff! Under foot is stiff and you still didn't say have you ridden these?
