It's people like you who give the US a bad name.
FIrst off, if the pad's are as useless as you say they are, they wouldn't bother wearing them at all.
And the 'best' NFL player probably wouldn't even make the first XV in a major rugby league eg. Super 14. It's a completely different sport, and requires actual fitness, unlike the NFL.
I am so tired of this fucking argument. I have played a number of sports including lacrosse and soccer and am playing football at the university level next year. Although lacrosse and soccer are great sports, football is by far the toughest sport I have ever played. It requires a huge amount of knowledge and strategy, physicality, agility, and yes, stamina. Although football plays on average last for anywhere between 5 and 20 seconds, during that time every player is going full speed. There is no no one going half speed or letting up in anyway. After a number of plays like this where players are experiencing an all out, full speed, physical war, it can certainly add up and become incredibly exhausting. As far as the "football is for pussies, rugby is better because they dont wear pads" argument goes, if football players didnt wear helmets and shoulder pads players would die. Football hits are very often helmet to helmet and hitting helmet to helmet at the speeds high level football player do would often end up being be fatal or brain damaging (not that brain injuries dont happen in football anyways). The style of hitting in the two sports is very different, rugby does not require any padding for this reason.... Imagine taking a hit like this without a helmet:
