Cousin Eddy's/ Asbestos Mine in Eden,VT

Anybody ever skied there? I skied it with a friend a couple weeks ago, awesome time. Its about 600-700 feet tall, 45 degrees, gnarly chutes. Its a little bit of AK in VT. The mountain is the waste pile from the old mine, it shut down about 15-20 years ago, and now the state is trying to make it a Superfund site :/.

Skiing on a massive pile of Asbestos waste doesn't really sounds like a smart idea. Even if it is covered in snow.

The #1 rule of Cousin Eddys is you don't talk about Cousin Eddys. But for real though such a VT gem...looks like you hit it good! Did you get hassled at all by the crusty old security guy that lives in a camper? Or maybe his days are through there. And for anyone saying it sketchy because of asbestos health reasons, it's just a large mine tailing dirt pile covered in snow. You'd be more likely to get sick from bicycling in LA for a day.

that's so sick! I think the meatheads filmed up there a year or two ago, or maybe at another asbrestos mine, you hike near one on the LT in northern VT between buttercup mtn and belvedire I believe.

He still works there apparently, there were some guys who were there that got kicked out a week before. I went with a buddy who used to be on R/D for Burton, and we got ready and hit the bootpack fast enough so that we didn't get yelled at. We kind of had to stick to the gullies, there wasn't quite enough snow on the open faces. It was so gnarly though, awesome experience.

LJ- This is the same place I believe, Belevidire Mtn is right behind the pile.

sounds weird but avalanche danger is present there..ski cut and ski with caution and even (gasp) wear beacons and know how to use them with all that damn snow you east coasters are getting.

I've found 'er on a map and all, but I'm curious as to how you approach it and which section you ski. I think I'ma head up this week at some point...and yes, I'll wear my beacon because lets be honest, we do have the most avi prone weather in the world, we just lack the terrain for the most part

we had beacons and probes with us, dug a pit, the whole nine yards. Be careful guys, this is place where you could get caught in a significant slide

As you drive up the road, (I think its called Old Schoolhouse) for about 2 miles, before you get to the actual entrance to the mine, there will be a small pull-off on the left side of the road. It is very important that you park here and do not drive past this point. If you do, you will be seen by the caretaker and kicked out. After you get your gear on, cross the powercut under the powerlines, and hike down the hill to the side of the lake. Im sure the ice is thick enough so that you can walk right across it. Before you do, pick your line and snap some pics of it, cause the line of sight from the top is horrible and you wont be able to pick your line from there. After crossing the lake, hike up a small hill and cross the road. Then start hiking straight up, there MIGHT be a bootpack. If not, be prepared to get really frusterated, its a hard hike up. Id hike more to the right side, then you can hike up the ridge. Just try to stay out of sight of the mine entrance. My advice is to ski the gullies and spines (not sure what the snow cover is like up there), the snow tends to pile up in these areas well. Also, bring snowshoes or regular boots to hike in, the rocks under the snow absolutely destroy the bottom of your ski boots. Be safe and have fun

I really don't recommend anyone ski at the mine. The snow isn't deep enough to dig a pit and there are no anchors to hold snow in place. Watch the video below to see how this happened.

ski it when its real cold and not windloading, and then the tailings wont fall away and you wont crack off a windslab.

thats probably why there is a caretaker to kick the east coast 'bc' skiers off it.

Damn.

Seriously, noone should be going in there. Between the trespassing issues and the serious snowpack dangers (coupled with comparatively low snowpack knowledge by east coasters in relation to west coasters), it's just not worth it.

There are no anchors on the tailing pile. It's all loose, small rock. Skiing it when it's really cold and not wind loaded won't make much of a difference. What's w/the shots at the east coast? You grew up here.
