Getting on rails from the side

This is my first season skiing park and I am starting to feel pretty comfortable with rails. I can switch up and 270 out. When I hit a rail I ski up to it with it dead center in between my skis. Then I pop and rotate onto it. Whenever the gap is too big to do this (over 1 ft), I try to jump on from the side. Whenever I do this, my momentum always drags me off the rail onto the side opposite of the one I hopped on from. I try to look straight at the end of the rail and face my shoulders towards it, but I still rarely finish it. What else can I do to keep my momentum going towards the end of the rail and not across it?

Face it from an angle and when you are on the lip, just pop with both skis and rotate your skis over the rail. If you find yourself sliding off, try scissoring your edge in order to prevent you from sliding over the rail.

Scissor that shit. If you hop on from the side try to drop your heel a little and put some pressure on your front foot. Hope that makes sense.

i always try to kind of "slide" from the side of the rail up onto the top, it seems to give me better balance and keep me from falling off the far side.. im by no means all that good at rails though

So drop my back leg's heel and dip the front leg's tip? That sounds like an easy way to get hit in the nuts, but I'll try it on some small rails this weekend. :)

I don't even think about my back edge, just focus on dropping the heel on your front ski, and watch some other kids do it

i dont really get what youre saying here but my advice is to pop evenly off both feet when youre on the lip, not just slide on?

if its not urban entry then go in like normal and just carry more speed. if you jump on from the side your momentum will always continue to push you. basically come in straight whenever possible

I always just look to the very end of the rail (if its a straight one) as soon as i take off. i usually just follow where my eyes go

There was a feature set up at PCMR a couple weeks ago where you had to get on from the side, because the rail intersected the jump... what you have to do is slightly press against the outside edge just enough to slow your momentum in that direction and then you just let your skis roll over the edge to a balanced comfortable position on top of the rail.

yeah it was confusing, i guess i kind of "roll" up onto the rail when im going urban on, instead of just jumping and landing on the rail. probably still doesnt make any sense, hard to explain
