External Hard Drive Question

im buying my 2nd one... and i have a few questions

Money is not really an issue, 200 is my max
it must be a bus drive (the computer is the power source)
i have a MBP so USB 2.0 or Firewire 800

1. Which company/HDDs are the most reliable?

2. Should i partion it (to keep time machine from filling it up)

3. how do you backup your files? (movies, .dmgs, pictures, etc)

4. I want to keep a copy of my comp just incase something fucks up, is time machine the best?

so these are just a few questions that ive been thinking about... if there is anything i should know about external drives tell me

if there is already a thread about this, plz link, teh searchbar is bad

I don't know about patroning space
There are also different ones that are both larger and have more space on them.

LaCie Rugged HD is a solid choice for a bus-powered drive, although I think they only go up to 500 GB at the moment. They have a 1 TB but it's not bus-powered. Firewire 800/400 and USB 2.0. They also have one that hits 7200rpm if you want to use it to edit video clips.


G-Tech is also really solid, so you won't go wrong either way.


From my experience, Time Machine is solid. Depending on how big your HD is on your comp, you may be able to partition it.

When I backup my files I make sure I have multiple copies of the important stuff on different drives to be sure I have them.

they have a 1TB model

but i think i may just go down to 500GB and get that Gdrive. there are not many options at 1TB and they are all expensive.
i already have a 500gb drive so i think ill have one to back up mu comp (maybe partion it to 300gbs and leave 200 for old photos and video and a whole bunch of .dmg files and uninstall shit) then i have a 500gb for everything else. my hard drive is 250 and is pretty much full, so is my external now thats why im looking to buy.
