ACL reconstruction

well hopefully im going to get my ACL rebuilt sometime this august. from past experience, what have some of you dont to help speed up the recoverey time? A kid on my soccer team had his done and he was 3 months on crutchs and now has to play with this massive ass brace on. Any of you ski with braces, hows that feel?

braces are bullshit. talk to your doctor and pt about them. mine told me that i didn't need one; but i was still scared, so i got one anyway. i used it about a week before i realized that my leg felt stronger and more stable without it on. i got a custom fit djortho defiance, by the way. don't get one of those.

One thing you can do is start working now, and get your leg really strong before surgery. Just be sure you only do things like bike, and lift weights. He is right, braces are bullshit, but you might want to use one while working out before the surgery. After the surgery I dont think a brace is necessary. Just listen to your physical therapist after the surgery.

dude it doesn't matter how strong your leg/knee is going into surgury, because let me tell you, all the muscle on your leg/knee disapeers because you can't use it, your therapist will give you a bag full of rubber bands and shit to try and 'Keep up' what ever muscles u still can in your ankle and such...

The stronger your leg is going into surgery, the better. Working out before the surgery will make a difference. But you are right, after the surgery you lose so much muscle. I lost 1 1/2 inches off my left thigh.

Pre-rehab is key! I am 3 months out of ACL reconstruction on Thursday this week. I suggest you dont try to speed up the recovery process...definitly not a good plan. Check out Tom Rosenburg in Park City at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital...he is one of the top guys in the nation and did the initial research on how to reconstruct ACLS without damaging surrounding tissues, He is very meticulous and well known for his accomplishements!

I just tore mine on valentine's day. One thing you definitely need to do is ICE. Ice is key after surgery to keep swelling down. I didnt do it enough and now im paying for it. Ice it all day long, 20 on 20 off, for the first few weeks. Use crutches as long as it feels unstable. Do Not fall down stairs and don't puch it. There is no need to get up and go right away. Where you will speed up the process is about 10 weeks out, start lifting like no other. Work your entire leg and do it every day. Your ACL is rebuilding itself, and you really cant speed up that process, but if you build up a ton of muscle around it, it makes it easier for it to rebuild without getting reinjured. Just do what the Doc says, and GO TO PHYSICAL THERAPY as much as possible.

it depends how much much of a lazy ass you are, the lazier u are the longer its goin to take im just short of 3 weeks off the surgery and it was just a few days ago i was walkin without a limp. just keep doin all the physical thereapy, icing will keep down swelling which is key for bending. and ya like the others said listen to the therapist and just keep on the ball with exersizing and work out and lift

make sure that you are not lazy!! get your ass in the gym and do some light lifting and stretch a ton, and after, make sure you do the most absurd rehab ever toget that thing stronger than ever, and probably stay off jumps for the first part of winter do rails

how many times a week where u guys in physio for? and what kind of tear did u have going into the surgery (i guess it doesnt really matter eh becasue its getting rebuilt...or does it?)

had my ACL reconstructed, (patella tendon graph) i had surgery on 3/24...took my straight leg brace off about 3 weeks ago, just started playing 21, plan on throwin down in july.

It depends on which method of surgery you use. If you have the option, have it done orthroscopically with a cadaver tendon. This way heals the fastest. You could be skiing (w/ a brace) in 7 months. Pre op conditioning might help. Post op physical therapy is the most important part. Do your exercises and stretches even though they suck.

yeah i only had crutches for 2 weeks after surgery and then PT 3x a week. dont push things too hard, and be prepared to get frusterated with your first time on skis.

^I'm having mine done using my hamstring tomorrow. I'll let you know how it is.

There's quite a few good online resources for knee surgery. You'll find much better information searching around than you ever will on NS, and it seems that you might need some.
