Outdoor Adventures Whistler are inhumane Dog Murderers

The B.C. SPCA is investigating "horrific" reports that a Whistler tour company slaughtered at least 100 sled dogs in a cull last year, dumping their bodies into a mass grave.

Marcie Moriarty, general manager for SPCA cruelty investigations, told ctvbc.ca that a worker at Outdoor Adventures Whistler filed a WorkSafe BC claim for post-traumatic stress after being ordered to shoot dozens of dogs to death.

"It's horrific," Moriarty said.

"I've seen some pretty terrible things, but reading this [claim], I had to put it down at times."

Moriarty said the slaughter was conducted between April 21 and 23. On his claim, the worker wrote that he had killed 70 dogs, but the company allegedly corrected that number to 100.

In the documents, the worker describes a dog that survived a shot to the face: "its eye was hanging off, and it was still running around," Moriarty said.

Another apparently dead dog was dumped into the mass grave, but the worker later noticed it trying to pull itself out.

"The fact that he did this in front of all the other dogs tethered there, I can't even imagine," Moriarty said.

Vet-supervised lethal injections would have been the humane way to cull the dogs, she added. "It is technically legal to shoot an animal, as long as it dies instantly. That most certainly did not happen in this instance."

She said the SPCA will now have to dig up the mass grave to complete its investigation, which will include the possibility of criminal charges.

Whistler RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair said police will be looking into the allegations, but said it's too early to say if there will be a criminal investigation.

Outdoor Adventures has not returned calls from ctvbc.ca..

FUCK ANY ONE WHO KILLS ANIMALS FOR UNJUST REASONS
i do hunt quite a bit but just reading about because of no money hundreds of dogs were slaughterer. this man should be put to death

my grandmother breeds dogs and yes i have had to kill dogs that could no longer eat because they didnt have enough muscle to open theyre jaw and ill tell you what even one to the back of theyre head it is a hard sight to see.

if you read the articles the guy wrestled the dogs to the ground and slit their throats, blew their heads off with shotguns. one dog was climbing out half alive and took a blow to the face. that is just fucked up, i kno for a fact the whole town of whistler would help out and those dogs would have had homes in no time. i dont think dead dogs is the main problem here, the way they were killed is. now that everyone is tyring to boycott TAG for this, what is going to happen the other 200 dogs when they do get shutdown.....what to do.

im disgusted with all of the insensitive people on this forum.  when people are in the hospital and too old or sick to continue on with life, does the doctor come up to them and slit their throat and shoot them in face witha  shotgun? no, im sure they usually get a needle stuck in them

if you ask me, it's the fact that those dogs got killed at all. i have a really hard time believing they could have never been placed into homes.

tons of puppy mills do this too. kill dogs because they're getting old(like what 3 years old?), or in some cases, often kill off a whole bunch because it's cheaper to kill them, then it is to get the meds they need for their often small, menial, illnesses they pick up from being so poorly taken care of. but what's funny about that, is they actually get punished for brutality when they get caught... the severity of it is really dependent on where you live. however, the spca doesn't get kicked in the ass for killing anything. and this... thank freaking god, the rcmp are involved. i really hope people open their god damn eyes. i mad.

the place should get a kick in the ass, and the only reason the guys bitching about his dreams is because he wants people to go easy on him. but frankly if a mass murderer said he felt remorse, he would still go to jail. again, annoyed as fuck.


regulate breeding and licenses. stop selling pets in pet shops, which have just as terrible horror stories. no kill shelters. etc.

while that must have been a grisly scene, i am mostly just confused as to why the company thought this was a good idea. it's wasteful of life (i eat meat, but i oppose killing animals arbitrarily), it's terrible for business once news like this gets out, and it caused this guy to have probably the worst day of his life. there are obviously alternatives, but it just seems like the company didn't really consider the future repercussions of their actions much so just chose the most immediately convenient option.

because of the language barrier we dont know how and to what degree other animals experience pain, sadness, depression, or contempt. That is reason enough to not be cruel. think back to slavery and try not to be such a moron next time

im disgusted not only with the OAW but with the people on this fucking forum. Blowing half a dogs face off is so beyond fucked up i cant believe some of you dont feel like this is wrong in anyway. Imagine if you sick fucks had to sit there and watch the dogs getting slaughtered, you would be scarred for life.
the people that shot and ordered the shootings so be tortured themselves for doing this to defenseless animals.

read my first post as well...

i'm referring to the method of putting the animals down, shooting a dog isn't any less "humane" as killing a pig or cow in a slaughterhouse (where mishaps als occur and animals get skinned alive or require several shots to the head before giving up, etc ...)

and in my first post i said they should've eaten the dogs, now they're just wasting them .....

I'm neutral on the subject. Yes it's fucked that some guy killed 100 dogs, and it could be called inhumane. But shit happens, and yea animals don't have the same rights as humans. I'm sorry, that's just how it works. Omiv, Cobracommander, and horner all made good points.

My dad is a semi profesional dog sled racer, so i have quite a bit of knowledge on the matter.


do they use female sled dogs?
Yes in fact females often build closer and more intimate bonds with people which has led to many of the top racers in the world using female lead dogs.

Why dont they not neuter them?
In the race world a lot more dogs are spayed, however most touring kennels dont spay. Simply because of the massive size of their kennels, 60-200 and at 300 dolars a pop it ads up real quick.

I don't think we have any PETAheads on here, so I don't think anyone will argue that animals are inferior to humans. However, it is still a blatant act of disrespect to have such little regard for any living creature. Also, we're not that far past chimps. There's a bigger gap between the average person's intelligence and Einsteins, than Chimps to that of the Average Joe.

Why is it disrespectful to have disregard for non-humans?

From biological standpoint, we people are built to survive and procreate at the expense of other living things. It's the way of the jungle, man. So there is nothing ethically wrong with killing other animals. Killing them on this scale is perhaps a bit excessive, but only in that I just don't see how this was a profitable decision to humans.

That said, I assume that the tour operator had a rational reason to kill the dogs; culling them was in their best interest. We humans must act in our best interest so as to advance our species.

I'll give you that there perhaps more variation in levels intelligence amongst humans...I really don't know either way. But that's irrelevant. We build cities. Chimpanzees live in trees. There are some researchers who believe that chimps have "culture," in that different groups of them do the same tasks differently, but this does not a human make. We are the only species that controls fire, discovered the wheel, and invented skis.

they bred too many in preparation for last year's olympics and couldn't sell them afterwards, and I think the veterinarian would not let them euthanize the dogs properly.
olympic legacy! I wonder what russia's olympic legacy will be...

also--it's one thing to shoot an animal that you are going to eat or a wild animal for sport, if you are skilled at shooting and it dies instantly. it's another to shoot an animal that is basically your companion, roommate and best friend... or to shoot something for the first time, and then have to kill 99 more by yourself, shooting them multiple times, watching them die slowly and shovelling them into a big hole. come on.
of course, the guy could have refused to kill any more of them...

1000's of dogs are put down everyday by shelters, so everybody who is acting disgusted and cant belive somethng like this could happen, need to opewn their eyes and get a rescue that will otherwise be put down.

Now I agree that killing them infront of eachother was FUCKED, and is were my probolem is.

He did TRY TO ADOPT the dogs but was unsucsessful, and with that many dogs, they couldnt feed them, or adopt, so they did what people have been doing for centuray with Domesticated animals such as dogs cats and horses.

in my opinion ALL Dog Sleding Tour Companys should be banned,
When animals are a object and is used to make money, their is always mistreatment of the animal in favor of money,which is wrong.

TLDR: Sad event, should not have killed them infront of eachother, tried to adopt out, couldnt feed :(
If you trul[y think he shold serve jail time, go the the pound and get a dog about to get euthenized.

this is true I heard about a guy on the news who's dog ran away, and was taken to the pound a few hours later. the shelter killed the dog a day later or something before the guy even had a chance to go pick him up. can't find the actual story but that's what i remember about it. terrible.

they shouldn't have bred so many. it was a retarded thing to do in the first place, to overbreed for a 2-week event. in the food and beverage industry if you overestimate, it's easy enough to throw food out or store it, or give it to the food bank. when you're working with animals you have to consider the ethical side of things and make better business decisions. in my opinion there was no excuse for it.
anyhow, who wants to adopt a sled racing dog? they are bred and trained differently, and these ones probably had bad social skills due to the poor conditions they were raised in.

Well when you over order food supplies you increase the demand for animal products, so more animals will get killed. Not to the same level, but you need to think it through. Also some of us don't have a big problem trimming population size.

You know what,I never thought about that. You are so right that it was extreamly wrong of them to raise the population for the olympics and to have their chief concern of monetary gains over the animals walefare and prioritys.

I just think that there are so many good dogs in pounds that unless adopted will live a sad life without knowing companionship, love, and all the wonderfull things, but yes your also right about sled dogs being hard to adopt since they are not trained like normals dogs
