Replying to Connection Issue

Hey guys so I have a gopro and I used the time lapse feature this afternoon to make a school project. That's besides the point though, I come to ask you what's happening with my connection.

I connect the camera, it pops up in my finder for ~30 seconds and then the warning about pulling a component out without ejecting appears and the camera is lost. This is without even touching the camera.

I am not using the usb connection that came with the camera because someone has it, I've been using the one that accompanies my 40D. Could this be the issue or do I have bigger problems?
