Spraypainting my POC helmet, safe or not?

Helloz,

just bought myself a helmet the other day, unfortunatly they didnt have the color i wanted in the size i needed so i ended up with this bright yellow helmet which i frankly aint that stoked on.

Soo, I just bought myself a can of black mat spraypaint to use on for spraying the helmet, have anyone done this before? Ive read the the solvent in the spray can eat away the plastic or something like that and make the helmet useless, i kinda doubt that, but can anyone back that up?

if anyone have any experience doing this i would appreciate some feedback on the subject :)

Have you used it? If not just return it and buy one online in the color you would like. Why would you buy something you didn't want?

its true most spray paints will weaken ur helment and make them more brittle

A receptor bug is a pretty expensive helmet to just spray with paint from the hardware store....just return it and get what you want. Spray painting can undermine the shell, and it will be well, spraypainted....unless you are Troy Lee just bring it back, sell it, or whatever you gotta do and get the helmet you want.

umm, well its safe, and i really want a black helmet myself and have been thinking about it lately too
and my friend did it. and that worked out well
he just did like 5 layers from a distance i guess so that the paint didn't run at all, but you might want to tape your straps so they dont get black on them, but make sure its like a mist going on the helmet! haha

Well I am convinced if some guy named chargrillburger on the internet says it is safe well then it must be.....However you should know that your expensive new helmet that you bought specifically to protect your head can be much less effective at it's intended task because you wanted a matte black one. 

Professionals who paint helmets  have specially formulated paints for specific helmet material with respect for each manufacturers shell material. You don't know what type of plastic or which paint to use so why would you gamble and risk getting an expensive new helmet with a potentially compromised integrity and a bad paint job?

If you insist on commiting to this stupid endevour instead of just returning the helmet and getting the one you want (I mean matte black is pretty much the most common helmet color), contact POC at the very least to inform yourself.

yeah i agree, i would try contact poc and see what happens, and also if you return the helmet then you can get the one you do want, plus if you paint it, when you crash the paint will scratch off and you'll have to go to the effort of re-painting again and again! thats pretty annoying.
but if you really want to do this then you could, because my friend owns a poc receptor bug and it is still safe as always and looks dope!

The thing is after altering your helmet at home you cannot really know the effect....it will only register if you crash and if it fails when it is not suppossed to and your brains are everywere... don't just assume something is safe, make damn sure it is....

Itll probly be fine, some manufacturers say not to even sticker the helmets so painting will be fine

i am 'the friend' who did it and it works great. completely safe and looks ill.. only problem is when it chips you see the original paint below.

Ive spray painted mine many times and its fine, your good. it looks sick when your spray logos or designs on you helmet too
