The sharpness could be better, but that may just be caused by you using the kit lens....

You are not exporting anything wrong, you just didnt have great light or a great lens.

Didn't notice the link, but still. You filmed on a gray/low contrast day, did some shakey fast pans and didn't color correct or color grade. You can't just hit record and create a beautiful shot.

Lens doesn't really matter that much. Looks what eheath said in his second post. The color is ok but please color correct if you want better quality.

For the most part, the lens he is using gives him great quality is what I meant to say. Ahhviously my post came off the wrong way. You can get great quality from the kit lens, you just have to know how to use it. Which is why I said the lens doesn't matter. My b.

No, the lens matters, if you have shitty glass, your gonna have shit photos/ videos

this is wrong, yea. although the kit lens isn't quite as bad as everybody says it is.

to OP, your image will be much improved by slowing down your pans/tilts (you probably need a better tripod too) and by doing some color correction and grading to make your image look better. pretty much exactly what eheath told you.

just so you have some reference, I shot these with the T2i and kit lens when i first bought it:







sorry for self promotion, but since i made them i know for a fact that they were kit lens only so they seemed like good examples of what the kit lens can do

You do color grading kids like this could never do, so kind of unfair example. I always encourage to bag kit lenses and buy good glass.

Ye everything everyone said in here seems pretty true. You kinda picked a dull day to shoot on, and your pans and tilts were too fast.

In terms of export quality your video looked good. But just in case you're curious about what settings to use check this page out

yea, true. but i wasn't so much encouraging him to keep his kit lens (i bought a new lens ASAP) as i was trying to show what good color grading and better camera movement can do with the exact same setup.

for color correction, just the 3-way color corrector in Final Cut.

for color grading, Magic Bullet Looks 1.2

Ahh typical eheath. No hate towards you but you don't need 1000+ glass or even 300+ glass to get the shots. Kit glass works. Yes it's not the best, but you can easily get clean/good looking shots with it.

Telling a beginner to get expensive glass like L series or Zeiss is so ignorant. INSTEAD. tell them how to manipulate what they do have to create better images. color grading can do wonders for footage. unless yo need super shallow DOF/film at night, you don't NEED a super fast lens. the kit lens isn't great, but by no means does it keep you from getting decent results. for still images. i suggest amazing glass. for beginner videos, hell no. keep working with your camera and start learning how to color correct!

I've seen plenty of work with the kit lens thats on par or better than the stuff shot with a L series glass. Good glass is great but you don't need it to get quality shots.

Anywho, Try manual focusing, I think you were using AF and it seems pretty jerky. You could also bump up the whites, overexpose by a stop or two when you shoot in the snow so it isn't so grey.

also, by encouraging kids to buy a kit lens, it's similar to telling them that if they buy a nicer lens, then they will be able to 'press record and get a beautiful shot,' or whatever you said.

kids should first learn to make do with what they have, they'll get better that way
