What benefits do you see in subsidizing electric and hybrid electric vehicles? and do you think it's a good idea?

I personally don't think we should be dishing out $7,500 credits towards the purchase of a brand new electric car. I don't like the idea that my money and everyone else's' is paying for John's Chevy Volt.

if we shut down all out power plants and replaced them with nuclear plants, we'd be out of uranium in 50 years. Plutonium is the answer but its a bitch to work with.

The US government has no constitutional authority to steal money from it's citizens, in order to give it away to a special (usually wealthier) group who can afford to buy one of these atrocious looking cars (why did they have to make the Prius look like that?). So, NO, they shouldn't be subsidised. If you're going to subsidise anything, how about bicycles? They're much cheaper AND fuel efficient.

Nuclear is HEAVILY subsidized. There would not be nuclear energy if it weren't for subsidies. This is an ignorant post and should be completely disregarded.

We just covered this in my Sustainability class but Ethanol kinda... well, it kinda sucks. The amount of energy you get out of it barely even equals the amount of energy to create it and it costs so fucking much to produce the stuff from transporting the corn to the distilling process.

Then you have biodiesel which has the same 1:1 type ratio for energy used to create it and energy you get out of it and while dealing with that you have the problem that biodiesel becomes this jelly like substance in temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

I don't know a lot about environmental engineering but I agree with this: finding alternative sources of power. most electricity is not sourced sustainably these days... (nuclear power, hydro, or gas) I also think more subsidies should be given to people who use public transit, and expanding/improving the transit systems. discounted pass programs for students and low income workers, for instance.
of course, making cities more dense and encouraging people to live closer to where they work would also be a sustainable move... walking to work is the most sustainable thing you can do, followed by bicycling. but unfortunately north americans love their suburbs so much...
