Steamboat vs Annapolis

Ok NS, I come to you with a question. My life dream has been to go to the Annapolis naval academy after high school. I have what it takes, but I have also been realizing lately how much skiing means to me, and how many new people I have met through it. It is almost time for me to start applying to colleges, and I was just wondering what you guys would do. I know that there is a cmc college in steamboat that people say great things about, but I also feel that is a duty and honor to serve my country (my family bleeds red white and blue). At steamboat, I would get to ski 4 days a week, but I am completely torn. So I was just wondering what you guys would suggest. Please no hate, this is a pretty serious matter for me. as someone who's made some serious life sacrifices to ski, go ski. Don't just look at CMC, there are other options for schools in ski places all over the west.

Well at this "community college" you get to ski almost all week, there are easy studies, and it isn't far from some of the other good resorts...

trust me, it isnt as easy to get into annapolis as you would think. but i still say go for it. from my school alone we have about 20 people applying, all with well over 4.0 gpas. and like 6 people have already been accepted to usma. but i still say go for it

I have been researching annapolis since middle school. Everything is there, from community service to recommendations from admirals. So I can easily go to either college.

You're going to start applying to colleges soon? I hope that means you're a Junior, because if you're a senior, you missed the application date to just about every college in the nation.

If you are a Junior, don't stress right now. You still have a whole year left before you start applying (usually in the Fall of your Senior year, due dates are typically around January 1st). I have friends who have gone to the Naval Academy, Military Academy, and Air Force Academy, and I'll tell you that it certainly takes a lot of strength, which is good thing if you have that quality. There are some people on here that go to USAFA, maybe talk to them about it? It's in CO (so you get to ski), you get to fly planes, and you're still doing everything you can to serve your country. That sounds like a good choice if you're seriously interested in both a service academy and skiing.

Regardless of all of this, as I said before... chill out for a minute. You've got some time to think about this decision, and it's certainly a big one.

it seems like your picking between two complete opposites, how about looking at cu boulder, u of u, actually schools near skiing that would be more inline with the other school you are applying too. it seems to me like your selling yourself short by trying to go to cmc, since you make yourself sound like a good student.

I went to CMC Steamboat for a year and I definitely agree theres not much of a party scene  and the school actively cracks down on nugs and underage drinking if you live in the dorms. Just get an  off campus spot and assimilate with the locals and you will have an epic time.

shit even if you didn't want to go military you could easily be accepted to University of Colorado, University of Vermont, Dartmouth, assuming your not lying about getting into annapolis


UVM is going to be the best mix of academics and skiing out there

I live in steamboat... and it is by far my favorite place in the world but cmc might not be the best academic choice for you... I myself am debating whether or not to go to the academic side or to do what i love most which is skiing

I've got a couple friends that went to c-me-ski at steamboat. They both love the town and I always have a great time when i go out there. Theres lots of shit to do if your old enough for bars and the nugs are ridiculously good(three dispensary's in the town now i think). But that being said they both got educations geared towards the ski industry so if your trying to be an academic go somewhere else maybe.
Don't join the army unless you really want to spend the next 4 years of your life with a bunch of dudes.

I live in Steamboat and attend CMC full time as a Junior in high school. I absolutely love CMC and it has been a great decision to study there. I however plan to go to a 4 year college after I finish my senor year at the high school.

If you want an education. Go to Annapolis. If skiing is your dream and want an easy going town with a great mountain, then CMC is great. But, CMC will not offer you the best education. I would personally say if you want an excellent education, look else where. But, if you really want to ski and enjoy a low key town, CMC Steamboat is great.

One of my best friends goes to Navy and was on the football team; He has a really love-hate relationship with the school
On one hand you are entering into a sick legacy and tradition of being transformed from some teenage douche into a naval officer. However you are actively trading off any semblance of a traditional collegiate life/experience by going to Navy. I can't tell you the shit my friend has missed because he attends the Academy; at the same time while I was skiing , going on cool trips, seeing Widespread live, and fratting , he was playing D-1 football, and preparing to be a pilot.

It really is a trade off in lifestyle and boils down to what makes you happy. An alternative to your plan could go along these lines- CMC for 2 years (get to shred 100+ days for 2 years, get sick grades at an easy school, transfer to CU or any other school after soph year.Once you transferred somewhere else get involved in a Naval ROTC or just sign up for OCS the summer after your JR year. You don't need to go to the Academy if you want to be a Naval Officer. Based off my friends experiences, I honestly think he feels like he missed out on some crucial elements of college at the Academy.

In terms of the education at CMC I would say that it isn't that bad. Its probably in line with a lower tier 4 year school. My econ class there was pretty in line with other econ classes i took at my previous liberal arts college. Took a great Art history Class that was pretty interesting/challenging. Also there political science classes are pretty strong too / but with a very liberal bias. As a pretentious, white, affluent, southerner I had a great time attending class and getting to know the people there. One day they will see some alumni monies go back their way.

If you are sure an academy is what you want to do and you want to serve and still want to ski why not go to the Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs? I'm a sophomore there, and have 27 days this season already.. USAFA > USNA, trust me. Feel free to PM if you have any questions about this place

Because age of the school really matters in determining its worth huh? At Annapolis mids are not allowed civilian clothes (what you're wearing right now) until junior year, I can have them at the end of freshman year. At navy, mids cannot have a car until senior year, I can have one junior year.  At navy, mids are allowed to leave the base, on average,  less than 5 times per year, and must leave in uniform until juinior year. I leave each weekend to go ski, and often times during the week. That's all based on rules. If you're looking at opportunity, USAFA still destroys USNA. I have made 85 free skydives and will have the opportunity to jump into the Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl and many airshows. Furthermore, I still have the chance to travel anywhere in the world for free over the summer or christmas break. Oh yeah and my breaks are longer. The list goes on and on.

Oh yeah, I won't be stuck on a ship for 6 months to a year. Instead, I'll be flying all over the world.

1. My school is 230 years old, so your AF academy can suck a fat Southern Meat pole
2. There are ways getting around the rules at Navy, my friend has had a car since freshman year and has an off campus house he lives at on the weekends
3. Navy is far more prestigious
4.There is a reason no one takes the AIr Force seriously, we could achieve all of our strategic objectives/gain air superiority over any other any potential enemies with our Naval and Marine Aerospace capabilities and at the same time save billions by simply dissolving the Air Force.

 Great, your "school" 230 years old, which school is that again, you failed to mention. My school is less than 60, yet already ranked top 15 universities in the country according the Forbes.

Get your facts straight because you clearly have no idea the mission of the Air Force.

I think you should consider applying to the Air Force Academy in CO. I go there right now and it's a really good deal. You are relatively close to the mountains (about 2 hours away)and you still get to serve your country once you graduate. Granted, you will be forced to be somewhat of a weekend warrior because you don't get to leave during the week, but it's totally worth it. Plus, we have a freestyle skiing club here that gets a pretty legit annual budget so you will get to take advantage of that (for free).

As others have said, there are plenty of other options.  If you have a shot at Annapolis, I would look at other schools, like UC Boulder, U of Utah, and U of Washington.  There are also places in California where you can ski 30-40 days a year and get a terrific education/life experience(Stanford Berkeley, UCSB, UCLA, UC Davis).  The California schools all have ski teams, so you can ski Tahoe/Mammoth 3-4 weekends a month if you want to. 

The point is, you have plenty of paths to choose from.  Annapolis is a big commitment, so I would say be sure before you go.  You will kiss skiing pretty much goodbye for quite a while. 

As I said before, if you have a chance to get into Annapolis, go somewhere other than a cmc.  There are lots of great skiing/school options out there.

 if you go to a service academy you shouldn't engage in action sports, which supports individuality,creativity ,and self expression- which military/government are inherently against.

Well if you're going to be a douche bag about it, you should educate yourself a little bit before hand.

We get 100% of our club funds from a non-profit organization known as the Association of Graduates, which supplies us with our funds from DONATIONS from graduates and parents of cadets currently enrolled at the Academy. Not one of your precious tax dollars goes towards our club, so you can sleep sound, you stingy piece of shit.

Anything else you want to complain about?

LOL are you seriously using this argument?

Using this logic, anyone who was ever paid by the government at some point in their life could be considered "spending tax payer" money when donating their money. This makes absolutely no sense. Are you going to complain about "tax dollars" going towards research for the cure for cancer next? When someone earns money, it is theirs to do whatever the hell they want with, regardless of who they earned it from.

You basically have one chance to go to Navy. You can always decide later to go back and live in Steamboat, attend CMC & ski 50-100 days. The decision to be made is, what do you think is going to make you happy in the long run?

Annapolis is a pretty dope city, i live in Severna Park about 7 miles north of it. there is a lot to do in annapolis especially downtown. there is ok skiing about 2 hours north (Liberty, Whitetail, Roundtop) and decent skiing (Wisp and 7 Springs) about 3-4 hours away. Three of my friends are going to the academy next year and they're all stoked for it. your in a very tough decesion because if you go to navy you'd be set for life, but steamboat is so sick (just got back from there about a month ago). If i was in your case i would go academy but thats just me.

something to think about for all of you kiddies out there.  Yeah, its fun to live in a ski town when you are fresh out of highschool, but trust me its a lot more fun when you are of age.You wont be too old or past your prime in 4 or 5 years, you will have plenty of time to shred.   I skid my way through college, spent some summers at mt hood, then i moved to steamboat almost 5 years ago, Its a fun place to live and i ski a lot and have a "real job".  Food for thought, my sister went to cmc for a year and couldnt stand it.  Oh yeah, as for the skiing in steamboat, save your money and buy a sled cause the resort is pretty tame.

Saint Michael's College and UVM if you don't mind lookin at east coast schools. 3 or 4 mountains less than an hour away, good schools, and you can do ROTC and look to do service after college.
