Silly boot fitters

alright so today i went to my local ski shop to find out what true size i was in boots because i bought some shitty started boots off a kid in the beginning of the year. I was looking at full tilt booters in like size 27 and the guy took my measurement which came out to a 25.5 and he goes and proceeds to tell me that i need a junior boot at a 24.5. my shoe size is a 10 which is a little bigger for my feet because i like them comfy. not to mention that the year before i used a 25.5 boot which i can barely put my foot into. just thought it was pretty funny on what they were trying to do. anyone else have stories like this?

I wear size 11 shoes and I ski a 26.5 boot which is an 8.5 in shoe sizes. Sounds like the boot fitter knows what he was talking about and you do not.

It sounds like you really want the Full Tilts, but your too much of a pussy to just buy them anyways, and you're looking for some reinforcement from Newschoolers because you lack a sense of independence.

And to the 24.5 thing. Most companies don't make and adult boot that small unless its special ordered. You were measured to a 25.5 that is some small ass feet. But you want a 27 because your head is too far up your ass to realize the boot fitter is only trying to help you.

I think the issue is that he was measured as a 25.5 and the bootfitter was trying to sell him a 24.5

I know nothing about boots and I'm not trying to say i do, but I'd he was sized as a 25.5 why didn't the bootfitter set him up with a 25.5?

A snugger fit allows for less movement of your foot in the boot. Less movement=better fit=better skiing. Wearing a size smaller is not uncommon at all.

im not trying to be an asshole as i like powder insists. im just trying to show how this boot fitter was trying to get me into the same size boots that i have road and felt uncomftorable in. i had even told him that but he was saying it was too big for me, i felt as if he was trying to put me in the small boots so the next year i would have to buy smaller sized boots. i was thinking maybe trying like a 26 would that be better? if i like the little extra room

Maybe they were uncomfertable because the boot didn't fit your foots shape. Or even better it was in fact too big.

Listen to the boot fitter.

Guess what. Boots too big for you can be uncomfortable and can hurt just as bad as boots too small for you. Maybe your old boots didn't fit in the ankle or width. Which can make them feel too small.

Honestly, Go in and and try on some boots. Whichever one feels comfortable on you just get it. If your not gunna listen to the bootfitter then dont. They wont tell you you cant buy a certain boot just because they dont think its right. Just keep in mind the bootfitter does know best.

alright thanks man and yeah they did try to tell me a 24.5 would be good but after reading this stuff i kinda realized that i am around a 25.5 to 26 i guess since i used to snowboard i like boots big maybe i have been using too big of boots thanks guys

I used to ski in 27.5 boot hand me down from my dad and I finally went to a boot fitter and now I'm in 26.5 and wear a size 9.5-10 shoe

Sorry to hijack the thread, but i measured my foot yesterday and its 26cm and a last of ~97mm. I'm going to a store this week to get fitted and want to try on some hot doggers, but they only have 26.5's and i doubt they have the bigger liner to make it a 26. Will that make a huge difference? I assume it means going from a 1 pencil shell fit to a 2, and those are both acceptable i am told.

It sucks how so few shops stock FTs in the UK, and in Europe they are SO overpriced.

inb4 go to a bootfitter - i AM, i just would like to know beforehand.

Yes it is normal to be sized down in ski boots. Because when you bend forward your toe will pull away from the front of the boot. If you get a boot that is right at what you measure you get too much movement in the ski boot and can cause a lot of shinbang. I wear a 7 womens shoe and I would be a 21.5 if I was a racer and im in a 22 now for park. Listen to the bootfitters they usually know what they are talking about. At footloose they wear shirts saying "trust me Im a boot fitter"

The fact that you are going to a boot fitter means nothing if you are dead set on Full Tilts, which may or may not even fit you.

26 and 26.5 are the same size shell, after a heatmold or a few days skiing they are the exact same size

Proper fitting boots will always be smaller. I always used to ski a 29.5, but after getting a Surefoot full custom setup, I now ski a 28 with room in the toes to spare. Proper footbeds and foot placement matter a lot more than the size.

Sorry I skipped the post where you agreed maybe the bootfitter was right. But I mean it's his job, I don't think he would seal you a smaller boot to make you come back next year.. if you are unsatisfied with his help, you just won't come back.

It's not like the bootfitter is like, hey lets fuck with this guy and give him a boot way too small for jokes!

It's evident that he thought for your footshape, weight and skiing type and aggression that the boot he brought out would be best for you.

well first of all he didnt bring out any boots. and second they never asked for any type of skiing ability i just said i wanted to get sized for a full tilt booter (only park boots there) and they used the foot thing which was around a 26 and they told me that i would be a 24.5 and i could "get away with" a 25.5

Also junior boots are a lot cheaper than most adult boots. Pretty much the opposite of upselling.

You really don't need a park boot for skiing. They fact that you went in there with a boot in mind is just a bad idea, as you should really just be getting the boot the boot fitter suggests, they're there to serve you not to mess up your feet.

It is always better to go with a tighter fitting boot then a loose fitting boot, as you can always make a boot bigger, but not smaller. I'm not sure if it was you or some else in the thread that said they'd want there boot to be loose, but thats the exact opposite of what you want in a ski boot.

sorry if i sound rude or something, it's been a long day of people bitching about ski boots haha.

definitely, some shops have a race fit mentality, but obviously, not everyone needs a super tight performance fit. Its just not neccessary to grind out the toe box of every boot sold...Generally, we size people sitting down, because it is the smallest fit, but we're not going to cram someone's foot into a boot that is abnormally small. I think the tendency comes from most people assuming that if a boot feels snug, which it should, its too tight. You'd be surprised how many people ride around in boots that are unusually large and comfy.

It depends a lot on the shape of your foot, some of this years FT's might be too wide if you have a real narrow, short foot. Why don't you go to a different shop and just see if they size you differently, because they probably will. I wouldn't have my heart set on FT's by the way, have the bootfitter tell you whats going to accomodate your foot the best.

Yea, I'm kinda choked- I wear a size 10 shoe and was in a 28.5 that were getting packed out, so I went in to a bunch of stores and bootfitters. I finally found a boot that didn't give me pressure points on the top of my foot, but the guy at the shop insisted that I go with a 25.5, even after I told him numerous times that it was a tight squeeze. I had done some reading and came away with the impression that a tight fit is good, so I got them heat molded with custom footbeds, walking away with $500 less to my name. Well, I now have no toenails on my big toes, they appear to be infected, I haven't gone afull day this season without being in some kind of pain, and I now know what people mean by the word shinbang.... I've had both toe boxes punched out along with a couple other pressure points that popped up, and have had the soles shaved down in the toe area. Needless to say I am not impressed, and will be buying larger boots next year

Here's what you do if you want to figure out what's going on with your foot and don't have the experience to fit your boots yourself: 

Whatever shop you go to will only sell you boots they carry.  Often you will have weird experiences going to a shop because they will want to sell you this or that boot based on what they stock or even what they can't get rid of at the moment.  So go to multiple shops, tell them what type of skiing you are doing, ect, and see what type/size of boots they put you in.  After you do this at 3 shops or so that carry different lines you will know for sure what boot you should be buying.  In the end, synthesize what the bootfitters have told you and you will be able to come to some sort of conclusion about your foot size, shape, and the boot you should be in.  Don't get a boot just because it is cool, this may result in bad times in the end.  Get the boot that fits your foot and has a flex pattern/stiffness you desire.

thanks for the tips guys i appreciate it. i really was concerned and i knew it would be a lot more painful than tight since ive tried other boots around the 25 size. ive had friends that have done this where they were convinced into buying a boot that was snug and ended up getting rid of them because they lost toenails and etc. i am now looking around more and will take all the tips into appreciation :)

Uhhh, D4VE, shin bang and black toes = probably skiing backseat.

Also, listen to your bootfitter. Boots that feel comfy in the shop will probably feel like crap once they pack out on the hill. Choose a boot that fits snung, but doesn't make you want to cry. FYI I wear a size 10 shoe and ski a 24.5, but I do like a more race like fit.

You were measured to a 25.5. A 25 is NOT too tight. It may feel tight in the store but once you ski in it, it will get bigger. If it actually does hurt your foot then the pain is cause by the boot not fitting you in the width, or ankle, or somewhere else. Losing toenails is almost always caused by boots too BIG, not too small. Or just their toenails are too long and they crack them. Seriously, myself and lots of others are trying to help you and you're ignoring us. Take the advice from people who actually know what they're talking about.

You sir a complete dumbass... i too am a certified bootfitter at a ski shop and i can tell you unless this bootfitter in question is a complete asshole, he would not force you to be in a boot that did not fit your foot because first off people that are not comfortable in there boots dislike skiing because of it and then no longer spend money on the sport which = less money to the shop. It can also backfire if the customer returns the boot and someone else fits you and realizes that it isnt your size then he is risking his job. from reading some of the things that your posting... you are what in the shop we call a "BOOT PUSSY" who comes in with some boot already in there mind wanting it even if it is not there size. So i would say just go back to the shop and get that 26 or 27 you want have your feet swimming around in your boots and be "comfy" but you mind as well just order the size you want online so when people see your terrible skiing technique because you have no control in your boots, you will in no way be able to tarnish the reputation of the ski shop that you shop at. THANKS
