Yes, America does exploit, and we are very good at it. And yes World War II vaulted us to the front in terms of military might. If you look at this page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_production_during_World_War_II, you will see that even before World War II we had a much larger economy than anyone else in the world.
