this. sick camera, and it looks really good in the video, but i have such a hard time understanding why, when you're shooting with such a rad HDSLR, one would feel the need to do those shitty crouching on the stairs fisheye shots, or follows with a fisheye.

cameras are better, and filming techniques have progressed. those angles are just as boring to watch with a GH2 as they are with an old VX. i would have expected a little (a lot) more creativity out of atiba and evans.

granted, i like most of the shots a ton, not that many used those traditional angles. but seeing them at all was pretty meh

and loren don't take that personally, just a grievance i had with the video ever since i first saw it somewhere else.

very cool video regardless and a good reminder that the GH2 is a serious competitor in the HDSLR market

something to keep in mind though is that skating, unlike skiing, you hit much smaller features. that fisheye is clutch for making what may be kind of a small 12 stair rail look ginormous. or a gap thats only a few feet look way bigger. and when filming lines, it really is just the easiest way to do do it, and still be sure to get everything.

...implying that bigger = better. And this is the very fallacious approach to skate filming that makes it so poor, in my opinion.

I have seen amazing skate filming (believe it or not), and it certainly didn't use optics to distort features just to make things seem bigger. It took into account things like composition, gesture, form, geometry, architecture, people, textures, color theory, etc.

So really, we just watched VX footage on steroids.

yea, i mean i hate lines anyways. never saw the point of them. probably contributes to why i hate that style of filming so much.

and although the features are smaller, it's just as impressive. even though many people could do a 12 stair rail on skis, it's waaay harder on a skateboard (to me at least). so i would be fine with a cool dolly shot or something.

i think what it comes down to is the old mentality that the filmer works for the rider. the filmer needs to be in a place where they can easily film the entire trick, and the odds of them missing the shot are low. plus that's an incredibly fast shot to set up, so the filmer is ready when the rider is. i do not agree with this mentality.

these are a couple edits made by Chris Mulhern, who I've worked with at Woodward for a couple years now. He's a really talented filmer and while he does still use the fisheye follow from time to time, he also has a lot of beautifully composed shots that don't attempt to make the feature look bigger. he just shows it as it is in a visually pleasing way.

word those were sick.

i mean im over the all vx2k with death lens edits too, but just dont mind the occasional fish shot. and i think that in general while ty still uses the fish he at least has some variety. well see when the chocolate video comes out if he still is trying to do that.

yea definitely, that's why i added that it was a pretty sick video as far as the GH2 goes.

i was just adding my own opinions of the filming because i was a little surprised by some of it
