its basically the entry-level competition organization for the US. the country is split into i think 7 divisions, most competitions are run by age-group, and the top 50 from each disipline at the end of the season go to compete at the Junior Olympics, and the top 35 go to the FIS Nationals. It's a great program for people being introduced into the competition scene, as well as people beginning to step into a few opens.
And back to the OP: the course, the judges, and the people in the comp all influence the experience. I think the top-ranked person on the ussa points list in the top 5 of the competition determines how many points the event is worth... Usually there is a smaller line available if the main line is huge (as there are usually a couple 10 year olds). Especially this early in the year, you might just want to keep it chill and not do anything too ridiculous (you still have a solid 3 months left, and probably not too many people are going to be throwing down at this point, but idk).
there are either 3 or 5 judges. they either have judges divided among features (say, this judge watches this rail and the first jump, this one watches the second and third jumps, etc), which is usually the case in slopestyle, or they have a judge for amplitude, difficulty of run, execution, and overall appearance of your run (which is done in halfpipe).
All i remember is it was 50 dollar entry and they gave you a ribbon and some "points" at my mountain. I dont see the point of it unless your trying to be a spanced rider.
it alllll depends. our contests in the pnw kind of sucked. white pass is the only team in the division so it was just us at our shitty park...
snowbowl, mt, wasnt much better. they somehow pulled rails out of their asses from their nonexistent park and slapped some weird shit together. if its at a place with good parks it will be fun.
judging can be stupid too. if you get good judges then it will be fine. but if you get some 50yr old asshole old school moguls judges then youre screwed. pray for the former and good luck.
someone dub 10'd one of the jumps in a comp today, no one else did, and he barely made top 5, not even first in age group. The winner had a really sick run, but the dub should have been enough to win, especially in a ussa comp.
Scotty D was pretty fumed when he found out his dub 12 didn't get him a top spot. I wouldn't blame him but then again it is a USSA comp. If it was in any other higher level organization comp, he would of placed very well I suppose.
idk at your resort. but at mine they are fucking bull shit. a run of 3, front flip,3 would beat a run of 5, switch 5,cork 9 its favorites. but it really comes down if the judges now there shit or not.
ive wanted to compete at a ussa comp but people say that they are basically jusdged by what the judges favorite trick is, not how hard they are. and im roetty competitive and i know i will end up being pissed off that soem kid beats me becuase of the judges.
