Okay, so the other day I got some new look pivots from rei from some in store credit I had. When I walked back to my car, I was intrigued by the bindings, since I had never had such a nice pair. I started twisting them around, and all of the sudden the fucking thing popped up and latched onto my thumb! My thumb was caught between the thin metal bar and the bottom of the heel piece, and was getting pinched thinner then a pencil. I was freaking out, trying to get the damn thing off. I even set my thumb on the ground and tried kicking the binding down like it was on a pair of skis. It did not work. By this time, a couple of minutes had gone by and my thumb was pale white and bulging twice as big as a large grape on the other side. I was scared shitless. I even thought my thumb was going to have to get amputated or the bindings cut off. I jumped out of my car and ran into a nearby grocery store. I ran into the bathroom and tried running cold water on my had and yanking it out. It didn't work. I then ran around the store asking people for help. Nobody could, and people looked at me like I was crazy. Finally, a fellow skier who had the same thing happen to him knew what to do and plied the bindings off my thumb. Luckily my thumb is not gone and I only suffered a couple blisters, a broken fingernail, and a sprained thumb joint.
Then, today I went into my local ski shop and told them of my ordeal. They said this is not a rare occurrence and it has happened to many people and is know as piovt/fks thumb. Has this happened to any other nsers?
haha who's that? I was talking to my friend who's a ski tech today and he said the same thing happened to him a couple of years ago. He even said people have lost parts of their fimgers and thumbs due to the extremely powerful spring retention in the binding. idk if he was bullshitting or not...
dude i had the same thing happen to me! i was messing around with my lil brothers fks 120s and i popped them down right onto the tips of my fingers. the din was set suuuuper low though, so after a few tries they popped off (took a little bit of work to get them off as my fingers had swelled up on the outside of the binding creating a pretty tight squeeze). lucky for me all i had was some pretty bad bruising under my finger nails that went away after about 6 months.
this just made my day i thought i was the only dumb ass that this could happen to!!!
i was tuning my skis and got my thumb caught in the pivot 18 while it was set at 16 the thing hurt like a bitch i lost my nail and now my dad is convinced im to stupid to operate a binding!!!
It really is the worst, when the heel is set to 13, and it is not mounted on a ski. People fail to realize the force that needs to be exerted to open a clamped binding. Its geometrically harder without the extra torque of a ski attached.
I surely will never do it again! I had to run around a fucking safeway for five minutes with a binding attached to my thumb, trying to find somebody to help me. It would have been comical if it had not been the worst pain ive ever felt in my life, worse the breaking a bone break or nutting on a rail. I should have taken a picture, my thumb was squeezed as thin as a pencil and then bulging on the other side into what looked like a ping pong ball. Im not touching those bastards again until they are on my skis, and that is with my feet!
Haha I had the same thing happen... I was trying to screw some shit in and engaged the binding on my finger... Ended up having to actually go to the ER and almost got my finger amputated. I got lucky and got it off barely in time by shredding the tip of my finger and now I can't feel anything at the top of my middle finger and its been that way for a long time... I usually don't share this story but since I seem to not be alone in this. Scariest 10 min of my life and and I still cringe every-time I pick up a pair of FKS. Theres nothing like explaining to a doctor that you smashed your finger in a ski binding in the middle of August. On a positive side the doctor thought my finger warranted pain pills so I got another prescription to further my addiction to hydros.
haha i know exactly where your comin from man! I have never been so scared and havn't touched my fks since! I was so scared either my thumb was going to have to get amputated or the bindings were going to have to get cut off my hand. Scariest five minutes of my life for sure! Luckily I have some hydrocodene at home to help me cope with the pain!
high din bindings + engaging or releasing the heel by hand always tends to go south. fks might be the worst, but dukes are a close second. so much junk to catch a finger on, its brutal. i learned my lesson the hard way back when i thought i needed my dins set at 17 and had to change my forward pressure...miserable.
aaaaa fuck i did this earlier this year. got my middle finger and index finger stuck for about 7 min. the guy that owned them before me had the dins on 13 and it took a fuck load of prying and working on that binding while yelling at friends to help me while they stood around like idiots but i finnaly got that bitch off. i still have massive bumps and dents in my fingers from it. you feel like an idiot after..
Yup, definitely did that last year, thumb got caught, couldn't get it off, really swollen and terrible looking, had to have someone help me get it off. No fun, but i have talked to several people who have done this, but only once. I have definitely learned from my stupidity
Lol at how many people this has happened to. It's like a super powerful mouse trap hahhahaha. I really want to see this misery happen in person so I can lol.
Did it a year and a half ago, and my thumbnail is still jacked because of it.
Won't ever happen again.
someone above me said it; but its pretty much impossible to disengage a heelpiece set to 13, not on a ski, while in tremendous amounts of pain because it has your thumb snapped in it like a bear trap.
Learn to pay attention to your filanges, and enjoy the best binding ever. :D
you talking about strings snapping or getting poked by the higher strings or something? not sure what you're getting at...
My friend did this and had to go to the hospital to get the binding off. Saved the binding and his finger but he didn't have a thumbnail for over a year.
Haha yep Basically exact same thing happened to me couldn't get it off for a while and I was freaking out! I could feel the end of my thumb for months but now I just have a bloody nail for like a year. Scary bindings!
this has happened to me twice. once on the chairlift (i dont remember how this happened) and then again the other day. first time my nail turned black and fell off. nothing has happened since the second time though.
