A family friend of mine passed away today snowboarding at Mt. Rose, Tahoe. Wasn't the best out there, but loved being on the mountain. Last run, he decided to take his helmet off thinking innocently he'd be fine. He hit a patch of ice unexpectedly and hit a tree dead on killing him on impact. He was only 15 years old. He had done nothing wrong and had so many more years ahead of him to live joyfully and enjoy the lifestyle on the mountain, which ended just like that. I know many others out there who have lost friends and family on the mountain as well, and it is the greatest opportunity we have being able to enjoy nature alongside our favorite pastime, but it must be respected. Wear a helmet. RIP Mason Ortiz
