I'm thinking about applying and I was wondering if anyone here goes to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. It seems pretty sick plus Whistler is there which is a rad, I hear there is campus housing at Whistler too!

Anyways I'd be stoked to hear some peoples' thoughts on UBC. Thanks

Just graduated from UBC. Whistler is sickk, locals are quite lackluster, but ski-able. City is the best when it's not raining (rarely)
What are you thinking about studying?

It depends what kind of skiing you're used to. I've definitely had some very fun days at Grouse, and it's about 10 minutes from my house. However, if you ski whistler, there's no going back.

Also, Sauder is one of the hardest business schools to get into. There has been a steady increase in applicants since I applied and now the admittance rate is nearing 4%. Make sure you kill your supplemental.

I like the atmosphere of the school, it's a smaller school so it's fairly easy to meet people and run into them all over the place.
What I don't like so much is that there is little to do on campus, and it's kind of a pain in the ass to get into Kelowna to do things. I am from a small town so the whole commuting thing is a pain to me, perhaps you're used to it.
The water on campus is pretty nasty too, but they're trying to fix that... they just weren't expecting the large jump of students this past year so the grounds don't necessarily hold everyone well.
On a brighter note, it's nice to be close to two decent resorts, Silverstar and Big White there is Crystal Mountain in Westbank too, but I've never gone there.
The profs and TAs are generally pretty kickass, except you have to remember that some of these profs are kind of the "rejects" from UBC-van or other institutes.
For me, UBCO was a good starting off point and I never planned to spend all four years here. If you're transferring from another university/college I'm assuming you've already looked into the calendar for courses you can take here, if not I suggest you do that incase what you want to take isn't available. I know a few of my friends who wanted to do Microbiology are trying to transfer to Van because they don't offer many courses here.
I hope that helps a little.

Spark Notes: It's a pretty cool school for when it comes to meeting people and such, the profs are decent, there isn't a whole lot to do on campus and big white and silverstar are both pretty close.

Yeah. To be honest i just want to be somewhere with skiing. UBC Van would be deece, but its so huge and isn't really in downtown Van, campus is up in the suburbs i think... so many asians though (noracist).

if you want to have easy access to skiing, go to UBC-O.

Academically it is well on its way to becoming one of the highest rated schools in the country (1$ bilion expansion plan etc). Smaller, more intimate classes and a beautiful campus as well (again, it is about a 10 minute drive down the highway into kelowna, but if you have a car or know how to take one of the many express busses this isn't an issue).

What IS a major benefit is the skiing.

In stead of having to drive 2 hours from UBC to Whistler (or having to deal with the less than stellar coast mountains), you can drive 40 minutes to Big White OR Silver Star (1.1 hours to Apex), close proximity to all interior mountains (including Revelstoke). There is even a bus that runs from Campus to big white every weekend.

I'm applying to UBCvan for the Faculty of Arts... major undeclared for now though. I visited with a friend who is currently a sophomore there, and she likes it. Her dorm was sick, a single room = very appealing.

A student season's pass for BOTH mountains comes in at around $400..

yes it is substantially discounted.

High 1700's on the SAT.

I've written and re-written and re-written my supplemental application responses until they were near flawless.

I applied to the Sauder Business School.

Is it likely or unlikely that I'd be accepted?

There is no way to tell.... we aren't the admissions committee.

I will say that it is very competitive.. and a 3.0 isn't exactly high.

Does anybody know about American/Canadian degree differences? Im a senior in highschool right now and want to go to school to be a dentist. I plan on going to a junior college in California for 2 years to get my general ed out of the way then transfering to a 4 year for the rest of my pre-dental and thennnn going to dental school.

If I go to UBC my Junior year to finish all of my pre-dental stuff, can I then go back to America for dental school? I would love to live up there for a few years for the experience but I'm not sure how hard it would be taking courses from a Canadian school and trying to use them to get into an American school like OHSU in Portland.

I was gonna go your route but I've got other things in mind if I don't get into UBC, but as long as you meet their requirements for the number of years of English, Maths, etc. that they require, it doesn't matter that you're from an American school. I'm not sure how it would work if you did Junior College though.

What JC are you planning on going to in California?

I just don't like UBC as an undergraduate school. I almost went there (without visiting the campus first) and I am so glad I did not. I was staying there last weekend with my buddy, who lives on campus. It literally takes longer to walk half way across campus than it does for me to walk to school, and then across campus (UVic). The skiing situation is awesome though. Just make sure you are choosing a school for more reasons than skiing.

UBC and Vancouver just have a completely different vibe than Victoria or Calgary, and I don't like it.

I'm first year engineering at UBC Vancouver. The business program is highly rated and the people I know who're in it seem to like it. Like said above, walking across campus is a pain sometimes but, that ain't much to complain about.

I go there, 2nd year in engineering. If you join the ski and board club its super easy to meet cool dudes who have cars and go to whistler frequently. student pass was $450 + HST this year, very cheap. You should have plenty of time to ski if you take business, engineering not so much. I still get to shred at least every second weekend though.

I found out today that I got into UBC! GAH and I hadn't even turned in my supplementary app/essays yet... I was working on it when I found out. For the first time in my life, procrastination would have given me more time in life to do what I want, but hey-o I'm stoked to have gotten in!

I'm saying that a major reason I am glad I'm not doing my undergrad at UBC is because UBC is fucking huge and impersonal and I don't like that.

and yeah it's legit. It doesn't really matter much where you get your BSc. anyways.
