Ok, so I was looking through the searchbar for some new metal bands and songs because I am in desperate need. There are some threads....but they're a little lacking and/or just too much.

Now, metalheads, I apologize and I do not mean to insult your definition of metal if you're somebody who defines it as Opeth, Black Dahlia Murder, Suicide Silence....etc.

My favorite band lately is Bullet For My Valentine. All of their albums are so sick, End of Days is my favorite song ever....I just want more stuff just like it and I need your help!!!

I know of Atreyu, Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage, In Flames, As I lay Dying, Escape the Fate, Haste the Day, Disturbed, I killed the prom queen, Devil Wears Prada...to name a few. Love them all, but I need more!!! Please help me out.

Seriously though. What about Protest the Hero, August Burns Red, Parkway Drive...? Or is that not your style either? I would have suggested Opeth, but you specifically listed that in the "don't mention section". But since I like them so much, I'll mention them. Try Opeth. Considering you like In Flames, I will also mention Children of Bodom and At the Gates. Or were you hoping for something else. If so, I cannot help you.

Every Time I Die is my favorite. All of their albums kick ass. And their dvd Shit Happens is fucking hilarious.

Also, my friends band based out of Boston, Vanna. They've got two full length albums and a couple of EP's. Definitely check them out

Found this new band recently called The Sorrow, check out "Knights of Doom" by them. And give it a chance, not as heavy as it sounds. Part from that most stuff has been mentioned that I know.

"Metal" is a very difficult topic. You could be talking about anything from Maiden, to KSE, to Bring Me The Horizon. So cut the shit about who's actually talking about real metal and jsut embrace it all; it's way too wide of a topic to be specific. A ton of genres are band defined, especially when they end in -core.

here's my favourite genre- the kind my band and I play- technical but heavy, and really fuckin fun to play. Do I live by this stuff? No, I listen to much more than underground ______-core bands

there is only one black metal band in that list. If you're going to make claims like that you should know what you're talking about. Opeth is prog, Gojira is heavy metal, Enslaved is prog black metal, and slough feg is hard rock.

I'll get this out of the way first. I don't give a fuck about sub-genres, so anyone who says "Such and such is metalcore, that's not real metal!" can blow it out their ass. If its heavy and aggressive, its generally good enough to be metal, no need to get your panties in a bunch about adding -core to the end.

Anyway, took some of the more common ones from my music library, and this should keep you busy for a little while at least.

All That Remains, Arch Enemy, Arkaea, Behemoth, Black Label Society, Bleeding Through, Blood Has Been Shed, Byzantine, Children of Bodom, Chimaira, Devildriver, Diecast, Dio, Divine Heresy, Dry Kill Logic, Fear Factory, Goatwhore, God Forbid, Hatebreed, Hatesphere, Human Abstract, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, Machine Head, Mastodon, Mechanism, Meshuggah, myGRAIN, Necrophagist, Pantera, Periphery, Roadrunner United, Scar Symmetry, Shadows Fall, Soilwork, Soulfly, Sylosis, The Agonist, Threat Signal, Trivium

I listen to many more but these are the more common ones you'd likely be interested in.

tool is like downtempo-industrial-progmetal-supergnar-impossibleotunderstandthemeaning of. I have seen them 2 times and it literally melts my brain every time i go.

If you are looking for more metal core try Between the burried and me, Bring me the horizon, and Early Avenged sevenfold.

thanks guys. I honestly don't know what genre it is. My favorite stuff is heavy but not just complete screaming and that's it.

Hate all you want, but the reason I really like BFMV and Atreyu-type bands are because they do scream, but they sing too. It's that awesome mix of the 2 that I enjoy.

I respect all types of "metal" and hopefully everybody is getting some new music ideas from this thread.

As long as you like it then nobody else's opinion matters. Nothing worse than someone who listens to only one genre and hates anything different. Death metal and black metal fans are notorious for that (not stereotyping, just what I've noticed in my experience).

Dude, I dont really agree with the way he put those bands into those genre as they are not properly labelled but you need genres and sub genres to explore music. Anyone who claims that music shouldnt be grouped into like genres is just not really that adept at music. I understand how the average joe can get upset at grouping music like "prog/ post etc etc" but it is completely valid if you listen to the structure of music and songwritting. You cannot group a pop metal band like slipknot or avenged sevenfold with a band the likes of Opeth who follow no musical structure ( sometimes no chorus at all and follow no set pattern for song structure) and expect a similar type of music. For the average person who just pops on a radio station or XM channel, the term "metal" can mean all bands with fast electric guitar but to a person who is deeply interested in music the term "metal" means nothing, its the sub genres that describe the type of music.

i see you have made a mistake
i am quite adept at music unless being able to actually play stuff like protest the hero and between the buried and me on bass is pussy shit while also being able to play stuff like jack johnson and city and colour on acoustic
i appreciate music a lot more than most people but i've come to realize that this overcategorization of music is retarded and unproductive
genres are fine but when it's stupid nitpicky stuff like 'oh this is hardcore' ' no it's POSThardcore' 'naw man it's blahblahblah' it's stupid

and do you not know how pandora and last.fm work?
it's based on artists for the most part
it gives you similar artists and songs to what you tell it

Im not saying anything about your ability to play music, for all i know you could rip on the guitar/bass. I dont think heavy metal is the "end all" of music as i much prefer to listen to classic rock and classic metal but I have a massive collection of music. I dont think metal is the hardest music to play by any standard, it maybe fast but its mostly scales and sweeps for guitar and drums almost always follow the same pattern except a few drummers like Brann from mastodon. If you compare the song writing ability of Alexi from COB to David Gilmour of pink floyd, there is no contest that Gilmour is much better at writing music as a whole where as Alexi may have more technical skill in speed. I enjoy almost all types of music, im not trying to rain on your parade or anything it just bothers me when people bash genres and sub genres because I know for a fact it is very useful and essential for finding music without the aid of last fm or musicplasma.
