Concealed weapons are great, if you are gonna get in a gang fight or something. People don't need a gun on them while buy groceries. I am all for owning weapons but concealing a little pistol or knife for everytime you leave your house is fucked up.

i have a knife everywhere i go, i never leave without it, its too damn handy, plus i guess it would be good to have if someone tried to fuck with me.
and i know people who carry a pistol basically all the time and they are not the type of people who would use it for anything but self defense, if you want to conceal a gun to use it in crime, its smarter to do it illegally, as its harder to trace it back to you. plus, i forget the statistics, but areas with a higher amount of concealed carry permit holders had a much lower rate of crime. and the amount of times people used their (legal) concealed carry in a crime in the US was insanely low.

legally owning and carrying weapons doesn't increase crime, it just allows law abiding citizens to protect themselves from criminals.

I used to be all for as much 2nd amendment as possible, but since the AZ shooting, and a kid shooting himself yesterday at the school where my dad teaches, i'm starting to think not so much. what happened yesterday really sketched me out.

I'm thinking of applying for a CCW permit in 2 years. I need to do some more soul-searching to figure out if I want the responsibility, but so far I'm feeling a big yes.

btw, what's the deal with the second amendment being up for interpretation by reporters? if the founding fathers, who happened to be incredibly smart, meant that we only have the right to form militias, then they sure would say "People have the right to form militias" without including the part saying "the right to bear arms shall no be infringed." Even after the supreme court ruled that we are guaranteed the right to bear arms, people STILL debate.

However, Arizona, Vermont, and Alaska are a tiny bit too lax. They still should screen to stop felons and crazies from having guns.

John Lott and David Mustard have used regression analysis to argue forcefully that “shall issue” laws (which give citizens an unimpeded right to secure permits for concealed
weapons) reduce violent crime. This article shows that the claim has support from certain facially plausible statistical models, but that these are rejected by a variety of statistical tests. Estimating more statistically preferred disaggregated models on more complete data, we show that in most states shall issue laws have been associated with more crime. Using our expanded data set and our preferred jurisdiction-specific regression model, we show that more states have experienced an upturn in crime than have experienced a downturn in crime after enacting the law and that the apparent stimulus to crime tends to be especially strong for those states that adopted in the last decade. We estimate that on net the passage of the law in 24 jurisdictions has increased the annual cost of crime somewhere on the order of half a billion dollars. We also provide an illustration of how our jurisdiction-specific regression model has the capacity to generate more nuanced assessments concerning which states might profit from a particular legal intervention.

Funny, I work at a grocery store. Being in Canada nobody carry's a gun, except the occasional cop who comes in to pick up a drunk. 3 years, and never once have I thought of the place as a "shooting gallery".

since when has the conservative members of the court believed that in cases of ambiguity, states rights ought to be overruled by a bunch of lawyers in Washington?

I read that earlier, and feel that there must be more to that than simply gun laws. I admit I don't have any knowledge in this area, but I would believe that the demographics of said states are vastly different. I doubt that violent crime rates would increase if a state that currently allows you to carry a concealed weapon suddenly outlawed it. I would like to see more information on this, I find it interesting, but as I said, I don't believe gun laws are the biggest difference between states.

I think you missed the point. If you had read that through, it was response to the comment that gun free zones become shooting gallery's. I'm not saying shooting never happen in grocery stores, obviously, what I'm saying is that I believe less people with guns will lead to less crime. Things like the Arizona shooting's are different, this isn't somebody with a concealed weapon who ends up shooting somebody. It's a horrible premeditated crime, and would happen no matter what your gun laws are. High school shootings, same thing. They happen in Canada too, but concealed weapons aren't gonna solve that problem, they'll probably make it worse.

Sorry I'm not familiar with the area, and I wouldn't expect licenced holders to be involved in many situations. But what I believe is that everyone being allowed to carry isn't a very positive situation. I know you disagree, but I believe the less guns out there the better.

put yourself in the criminals place though. would you go break into someones house in some redneck town where everyone has guns on them and in their house, and know how to use them very well? or would you rather break into someones house in a big city where concealed carry is not legal and guns are viewed in a much more negative way? now a huge part of this is that big cities, which tend to have strict gun laws, also have gangs, unlike your average farmer town in texas.
but would these big cities be safer if they had relaxed gun laws? its easy as hell to buy a gun illegally, especially in a big city. the only people buying guns legally would be buying them for self defense or for sport.
common sense would tell you that when you give law abiding citizens more power to protect themselves, crime rates would naturally go down.

personally, even if it were more dangerous with relaxed gun laws and concealed carry being legal everywhere, i would still be all for it. there are risks associated with freedom and there are risks associated with little freedom. ill take the risks associated with freedom every time.

if the government/cops get to carry guns, we sure as hell need to be able to also.

Good points, although most smart criminals break in when nobody's home. People being able to own guns isn't really what I don't like, I know a lot of people who own guns, although not handguns. I don't mind guns at somebody's house. But that's a lot different than Joe Blo walking around town with a pistol under his shirt. I don't see the benifits in that.
