Chairlift Safety Bar?

Hello NS, I'm skiing in Italy currently (*claim?) and i realized that everyone here uses the safety bars on the chairlifts. i find this pretty annoying since i have never really used them my whole life until coming here. I've also heard that people use them on the east coast. So i was wondering if you guys use them and what your opinion was on them.

We have to use them at my mountain, or else we get in shit. And honestly, I don't see why you wouldn't use them. It's not like they're that big of an inconvenience, especially for what they protect you against.

yeah I'm from the east and we don't really use them here.. unless i'm riding with a small skier thats in the ski school or something. and thats sick your in italy, but when in rome, do as the romans do.

at alta they dont even have them.  you arent scared when there is a bar but its not down but its crazy scarry going up the supreme lift and having no bar.

i use them because im abit heavier and so is my skiing buddy so when we stop suddenly in between towers we bounce quite abit. and after all it only takes a second to put it up and down.

i'm confused? its just a metal bar siting in front of you. and its always the person who wants to use it that pulls it down. there is literally no work in just siting there and have it puled down by someone else. why would i even think about it?

i know but it was a bit different coming to a place where people did that every ride and coming from a place where no one does it. i thought it would make good conversation.

i like the foot rest because it doesnt cut off the circulation to your feet when your legs are being wieghed down so it keeps my feet more warm. just makes it more relaxed

ah, do you guys get a lot of accidents in your resorts because of that? i cant se my self falling out of one but i guess kids, old ppl and "gapers" could be a potential high risk demographic

I only really use it on one lift because its like 75-100 feet off the ground and its on the peak so it gets mad windy. other than that i only use it to rest my feet occasionaly

Just the way my boots seem to rest makes my feet fall asleep on the lift. I have Anthems...

On the topic of the bar, I use it when its windy sometimes. Or when I'm tired

i dont like it. this is why: you know when the lift stops suddenly cause you can hear and feel it, and have time to grab the back of the chair/armrest/bottom of chair. on top of this, i want the option to abandon ship if the rope falls off a tower and we drop to the ground then get catapaulted up.

I get scared when i can die and i am not in control... i like it much better if i can save myself, and not rely on other people/things.

when i was in holiday valley i swear all their safety rangers did were ski down lift lines and yell " put your bar down please", but here at 7 springs, some people will insist, but most of the time exp skiers just leave it

I lower my safety bar if I'm riding with a little kid or something, or if it's a really sketchy lift or if it's really windy.

Otherwise, I don't put it down because honestly I don't think they would save you from much and its a little bit of a hastle

well the main reason for them is obviously saftey, on the east cost we get so much wind that sometimes its a necesity to put them down..if you dont youll simply fall off. and for some reason a lot of eastcoast skiers just freak out when someone refuses to put the bar down...its actually pretty funny to watch ahaha

i have the line 2005 skogen sprang model 178..they arnt the heaviest but my binding and my boots are heavy and im pretty small. so it prolly affects me a little more. its not like instant but on a 8 or 9 min chair ride the last two min kinda get uncofortable

The most common reason for why people fall off lifts is because they're either lowering or raising the bar.......???

You guys are so ridiculous.  Not lowering the safety bar doesn't all of a sudden make you cool.  Safety bars with foot rests are freakin awesome cause you can rest your legs/feet.  My boots sometimes hurt my feet when they're just hanging.  Also if you can't understand how 20+ pounds of ski equipment dangling from feet would cause your legs some fatigue, then you're either 12 or stupid.

Safety bars without a foot rest is still pretty awesome cause you can lean your whole body on it.  I'm all about the safety bar.

With a lot of kids, I'd say that's right on point.

In VT it's a state law. All that happens if you leave it up is a patroller might ask you to put it down, but I don't really see any reason not to put it down when you get on the lift. I lvie in Salt Lake now, and spend alot of time riding lifts that don't even have bars, so when I do get on one with a bar I often forget to put it down. I could really care less either way, the only thing that bothers s when people put the bar down without letting everyone know it's coming down. Never fun to get smacked in the back of the head with a metal bar.

i dont see how spending 2 seconds max putting the bar down and putting it back up is a hassle at all? i always do i guess its just become a habit even if it doesnt help with safety very much i just think the 2 seconds of "hassle" is well worth the added safety no matter how minuscule it may be

Not usually. All I know is if I get hit in the head by the bar when riding with some random person one more time, I'm gonna kill someone. Is it really that hard to say, "putting down the bar man"?

I live on east coast, and it is accepted either way up or down, ski patrol usually tells you to put them down, but I dont, unless im like super tired or something

WHy wouldnt u put it down? its like a seat belt for ur safty. IMO being 40 ta 50 ft up with out the bar down is kinda sketchy plus they have foot rests.

I hate when the bar has that piece that rests on the cushion, it always pinches my snowpants and prevents my large ass from spreading out

im the only person i ski with that puts it down. i just get bugged out with the wind and all that. i like to rest on it anyway.i dont think its cool to keep it up or put it down, guess its just preference.

i use it, i dont care if i look like a bad ass going up the lift or not, i also use it for my little bro (7 years old) i dont want him to see me not using it and then have him try and get hurt i couldn't live with myself. and for preventing you from falling to your death its not that hard to move your arms twice for a 10+ minute ride.

Barring a mechanical malfunction, as long as you are riding the chairlift correctly (that is, your back is on the backrest and your knees are roughly at the end of the chair), it is physically impossible to fall off of a chairlift.

Naw I find the bar gives myself, more injuries like getting hit with it all the time. Fuck I've gotten it right in the mouth before. I like it up, unless it is windy or a really high chair.

That said, I never use safety bars because I grew up riding Riblet center-pole double chairlifts. So I just feel comfortable enough without.
